Do you feel that you "dress too old/young for your age" to quote my mother

I was in New Look today - I like New Look (despite being 38) because they do 33" inside leg jeans and trousers. Their tops are also quite long in the body so a good fit. I was also in peacocks.
My mum reckons I shouldn't be in shops "like that" (i.e in her opinion for youngsters) and that I "dress too young ", likewise, she thinks my cousin who is 31, and happily buys a lot of her clothes in M&S, John lewis etc "dresses too old".
Whereas I think, if I like it, it suits me and it fits then I buy it. I have nothing that would be termed as high fashion
(let's be honest most of today's fashion I had first time round in the 80's when I was a teenager)

I think its good to have a range of looks tbh. I have my classic clothes (love 50's and Audrey Hepburn style) but then I also have a stack of Top Shop funky stuff, along with surf girl looks for my "can't be arsed" days

Of course, there are some items that you just know you should steer away from past a certain age (pelmet skirts, wet-look leggings ). But I would say fashion is a reflection of who you are not how old you are.

BarefootShirl · 19/03/2009 12:58

Provided you can look in the mirror and not think "mutton dressed as lamb" then I think you should wear what you feel good in. I still like to dress quite young, despite the effects of 2 DCs, but I do give myself a "reality check" before I buy an outfit .

FigmentOfYourImagination · 19/03/2009 13:02

I prob dress too 'old' in winter and too 'young' in the summer

AnyFucker · 19/03/2009 13:14

wellllll, I do tend to be the oldest person browsing around TopShop and River Island these days.... (I am early 40's)

I think I dress slightly too young tbh, but I find it difficult to see anything I like that is "imbetween", I am soooooo not ready for Wallis and BHS just yet.....

Brangelina · 19/03/2009 13:19

I'm in my 40s and still feel too young for the likes of M&S and Wallis. I've never really dwelt on whether I'm dressing too young for my age, I just go with what I like and what suits me, even if it is Miss Sixty or Roxy. I think you have to dress to suit your mentality and if you can get away with it, why not?

The only concession I have made to my age is that I've stopped wearing insanely short mini skirts, not because my knees have gone all knobbly but because it no longer felt right.

AnyFucker · 19/03/2009 13:27

yes, mini-skirts are out for me too

wrinkly knees and varicosities are not attractive, but then I've never suited 'em anyway (long, skinny legs and not in a good way)

but I wear trendy jeans and cute little jackets, very fitted sweater dresses cos I am slim, rough 'n' tough combats, biker boots, the ubiquitous Converse, Fat Face, River Island t-shirts and shirts, Republic knitwear, TopShop cardis etc

if that is "mutton" then so be it

giantkatestacks · 19/03/2009 13:31

Yep i definately do - especially in summer as figment said. But fuck it - I cant stand that M&S home counties look most of the school mums seem to do its just soooo dull...

Though it has led to one granny at the school gate asking if the children were mine or was I the au pair

have i made any concessions? well i dont do short skirts and am not going to do 80s again or stuff like knee high socks.

Brangelina · 19/03/2009 13:48

I think it does help if you are slim. My mum has always been minute and skinny and managed to get away with trendy jeans well into her 60s.

Saltire · 19/03/2009 13:48

Well I don't wear mini skirts. In fact the alst time I wore one was when I was about 21!. Today i got 2 pairs combat roll up type trousers, and 3 tops. I don't think any of them are too young or old for me.
I think my mum's problem is that she doens't like fashion, she's never been into clothes, getting her a dress for my cousins wedding was a nightmare, my poor step dad rang me up and said "we are coming to you, you can take her to get something", and she lives in tracksuit bottoms and t-shirts during the day. So she , I think, thinks I should be the same "why do you wear jeans" she'll say "why have you got a low top on" "why do you wear flip flops a lot" (in answer tot eh last question, cos my feet swell when they get sore, that's why).

I'm nearly 35 and I still shop in New Look / top shop etc. They have loads of clothes that aren't just for teenagers. I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than shop in Next.

ForeverOptimistic · 19/03/2009 14:07

I think I dress too old, I am not as slim as I once was so I don't really have much interest in fashion as nothing suits me at the moment. I will get back to how I was at some point.

My mil (57) and Mum (71) both shop in New Look so you are not too old!

bigTillyMint · 19/03/2009 14:11

I stopped wearing mini-skirts when I had my first DC, abd I don't wear teenage fashion like neon leggings , but other than that, I wear what I want.

bigTillyMint · 19/03/2009 14:14

My mum said years ago "you won't still have long hair when you're forty, will you?"

Well, I'm well past forty now and I'm not cutting it short yet!
