What's the easiest way to bleach a pair of jeans?

OK - with bleach, yes, I know! I want to bleach a pair of DH's jeans for my 80's party - I'm sure we used to do this way back then, but can't remember what we did. Stick them in the bath in a bleach solution? Does this stain the bath? In the washing machine with bleach?

Any tips gratefully received

We used to do them in the bath. Some thin bleach mixed with water (old codger emoticon)
