remember that thread wondering why we were all getting mysterious holes in the fronts of tops and we thought it had something to do with washing machines!

well it has happened to a t-shirt and I haven't even washed it yet!

Must be something to do with the button on my jeans .
Might be a little teeny man with a very sharp pointy thing living in my tummy button.

I started a trhead on this.
Still not really sure why it happens but it still does...

kdk · 17/03/2009 12:26

I can't tell you how glad I am to see this thread and know it is not just me - I used to think it was burn holes but I don't smoke anymore and I still have tiny holes in my tops just around the bellybutton area - not so bad in cotton/wool but a nightmare in cashmere even if it's only Tescos cashmere - sure it's not moths as I have lots of mothball type things and change them regularly. Any biologists/zoologists/fabric specialists out there?

NorbertDentressangle · 17/03/2009 12:30

This happens to me too -I've always assumed that its from being careless when zipping up my jeans and catching a bit of the top in the zip.

maveta-that post may have the answer!!!

right am going to wear my top backwards and see.

SweetEm · 17/03/2009 13:34

I wouldn't have thought it was moths. If you have carpet/clothes moths you generally know about it - there are always tell-tale casings left behind by the moth larvae. And they are not exactly shy - we are always seeing the little buggers flying about. So far our moths have only ever eaten wool - no jersey t-shirt has ever been damaged by moths.

TBH, I thought the holes in my t-shirts were caused by me picking the cat up and her struggling to get back down and snagging me with her claws!

WilyWombat · 17/03/2009 13:35

Ah we have granite, so maybe its the granite, fabric, belt together.

EachPeachPearMum · 17/03/2009 13:51

Ooh- I was on the original thread.... we have a problem at the back of dh's trousers too... so it's definitely not from a belt (plus he doesn't wear one)- someone suggested stress wear from having too much in pockets... but if it was a brand nwe t shirt, how would that happen?

brimfull · 17/03/2009 14:06

mixture of cheap fabric and rubbing on worktop I reckon

OP posts:
mileniwmffalcon · 17/03/2009 14:12

could it be to do with security tags? (although i can't think of anywhere that would tag a tshirt at the belly button )

loulabelle777 · 17/03/2009 14:19

I get these little holes quite often (generally on thinner jersey type fabric) but I always assumed it was where I have a habit of pulling the front of my top down from the bottom (to hide big tummy!) and it was putting a lot of stress on the material.

piratecat · 17/03/2009 14:26

with me I know it's my belt. I have tried to replace my belt, i have hunted high and low for a good one for two yrs. I love my belt.

lizandlulu · 17/03/2009 19:02

this happens with me and my mum too, we laways put it down to the fact that they rub on the part of the trousers/jeans where the button is

coolkat · 17/03/2009 19:22

Another hole in top sufferer to. Infact getting quite annoyed by them. I was convinced it was my belt and the metal bit was doing the holes when I was against the work tops.

I have replaced my belt for one without the metal prong so time will tell!!

Nice to know I am not the only one!!

upagumtree · 18/03/2009 09:39

Coolkat, all of my belts are minus the metal prongs and I still get the holes . Must be some sort of conspiracy going on.

hellywobs · 18/03/2009 11:54

My husband has it on the cuffs of a couple of his shirts. I thought it was his watch as it's only the left side. I don't think it's moths at this time of year.

Poledra · 18/03/2009 13:19

I am liking the idea that teh kitchen worktops cause it (my DH does v little in the kitchen, and doesn't suffer from these little holes in his clothes). However, my worktops are just ordinary Formica, and I'm tall enough that my belt is above the level of the worktop too. Perhaps it's my zip that does it.....

DaisyMooSteiner · 18/03/2009 13:20

I remember that thread. I told a friend about water-mice that live in your washing machine and she totally PHSL, in fact I've never lived it down

I have resurrected this thread because I have solved the puzzle!

It is the zip on jeans. I caught the little metal bit sticking out and biting my shirt only the other day.

Button-fly for me from here on in.

MillyR · 30/09/2010 23:18

I never get holes in tops. I am really lazy so am going along with the theory that your tops are rubbing on kitchen worktops as you busily work away.

happilyeverafter · 30/09/2010 23:21

I sent a top back recently because it had a hole after the first time I wore it.

It was a very fine knit one and French Connection did send me a replacement. I did wear it with zip fly jeans and a belt though...

Stretch · 30/09/2010 23:24

Mine was on my back around my bra strap area. Thought it was the washer/dryer?

Evenstar · 30/09/2010 23:27

I had this problem for a long time and it stopped as soon as I lost enough weight for my tummy not to rub against the worktop when I was in the kitchen Blush I think it was the jeans button rubbing the fabric against the worktops.
