Normally go for cheap and cheerful, they end up with scratches/slobber on (kids not mine.....) but thinking this year I may upgrade myself, is this just crazy talk..talk to me

ok....so DH had this theory about 4 years ago that if I spent some serious dosh on my sunnies then I might not get them scratched, played with by kids, shove them in handbag without proper case etc, not lose them.....

Didn't work! I had a Gucci pair that cost £100 (on the same day we had aforementioned discussion). One month later, one of the arms got twisted by my kids who had found them and were fighting over who was going to get to be the cool dude and model them. Cue a mama looking more Jack Duckworth than Jackie O. Fast forward 3 years where DH says "well, they were quite thin arms on your last expensive pair.....why not go for something chunky like these swish D&G ones for a bargainous £120. Nope. Not survived either. Stylish they may be but they are now my emergency glasses stuffed in the car for rare sunny driving days, pickled in scratches.

The pairs I use most regularly and have worn the best? A pair of Gucci-esque "bug eye" glasses from a stall in Parga for 8 euros 3 years ago and the pair I bought on my ski trip two months ago in France which cost me 17 euros

I was tempted by pricey ones recently
I resisted and bought some in Tesco
4 days later DS destroyed them

You need to keep them under lock and key away from small people imho

Boots own brand but good ones. £45. 3 yrs and no scratches, and wear them every day.

I've subscribed to TRMJS' DH theory and it's worked for me, but I have to watch the kids like a hawk around them!

I love those Prada sunnies, anniemac. They're gorg.

I've always gone for cheaper ones because I always scratch them.

DP has some Oakleys that cost a fortune. You'd think they were solid platinum the way he guards them.

Haven't got the heart to tell him they don't suit his face shape

i love love love sunnies and last year treated myslef to 3 pais of expensive ones. but i will not wear them around dd (who as 3 knows better than to try to rip them off my face) but still wont tempt fate.

when i am with dd i wear primark ones cause they get checked about alot. i have had river island ones and wasnt impressed with the quality tbh, especially for the price.

i am going on holiday next week with dd, my friend and her 2 children and i am in 2 minds weather to risk taking a good pair, but i dont dare

TheYearOfTheCat · 17/03/2009 23:26

I used to spend outrageous amounts on sunnies before I had children. £500 a year was normal for me.

Now I buy £10 ones from M&S. They are great, and bizarrely, the cheaper they are, the less attractive they are to destructoids DC.

It is worth buying decent ones imo because the lenses on cheap ones aren't very protective.

Lizzylou · 18/03/2009 12:16

I have a pair of Prada ones, similar (darker metal though)
To these

I bought them from Yoox.com 6 years ago and there is not a scratch on them, I guard them with my life and cannot afford to replace them at the moment. I have a heck of a job finding sunglasses that suit me, have a very wide bridge.

fishie · 18/03/2009 13:15

i've got the boden ones. they are v good qual for the money and the lenses are a really nice colour, no peering through brown murk. the case is disgusting though and far too embarrassing to whip out in public.
