Can you really really wear black to a wedding?

I know some people say yes....but is it really ok? I just don't want to feel like I stick out because I am or feel like people are thinking 'why the hell is she wearing black?!'

I've found some bright pink shoes I like and due to lack of time/being in early pg/having to shop with a toddler, I'm finding it hard to find the dress I have in my mind so a black one would be much easier.

So could I wear a plain black dress with the pink shoes and then try and find other pink things-a shrug, bag, big flower or something to pin on the dress? Will that really be weddingy enough?

I just had the idea of a brightly coloured dress with some kind of design/pattern/flowers on it so am finding the black thing difficult to get my head around

Yes, I've worn black to a wedding and had 4 ladies wear black to mine.

MrsMattie · 15/03/2009 16:45

Yes. It's an incredibly old fashioned idea that you can't, imo.

I've worn black to two weddings and got nothing but compliments (one was an extremely formal wedding, too).

I think if you are going to accessorize with bright colours, then even better.

Drinkypops · 15/03/2009 16:45

My MIL did...........

ShowOfHands · 15/03/2009 16:47

My Mum wore black to my brother's first wedding.

sammysam · 15/03/2009 16:53

The thing that puts me off is I have heard lots of mils wearing black to weddings to make a point.....now I know i'm not a mil but still I don't want anyone to be thinking along those lines.....I don't know why they would really-think it's just my crazy pg thoughts and hormones that are making me think this

Trust me, nobody will mind. They'll probably be cursing themselves for squeezing their bod into some hideous flowery monstrosity while you look slinky in black .

Oh, and when I was pregnant with my 2nd baby I went to a wedding wearing a black Isabella Oliver wrap dress with gold heels and accessories. I got so many compliments.

You'll be fine!

GossipMonger · 15/03/2009 17:00

Do people really care what other people wear to weddings?

I know that I am only really interested in myself and the bride!!

My sis bought herself a strapless black dress as she is going to 5(!) weddings this year! and her plan is to use different accessories for each one thus rendering each outfit different!!

She wore a turquoise wrap and shoes with a black/turquoise bag and a fascinator for the first one.

She is planning on cream, cerise, purple and jade for the next few!

littleducks · 15/03/2009 17:04

i wouldnt!

i do wonder why people do

purits · 15/03/2009 17:10

Black?
Boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring.

Did I mention that I find black boring?

MrsMattie · 15/03/2009 17:17

Black isn't boring if it's worn with colourful/well put together accessories. It's actually much more exciting than the usual 'summery' wedding fodder. Well, I think so.

sammysam · 15/03/2009 17:20

gossipmonger vs littleducks......this is why I worry

I do find black quite boring-I just don't think I'm going to find it very easy finding anything else

I have 2 weddings to go to this year, and have fallen in love with this black and white giraffe print dress. Not sure how to accessorise it, but I want it! The black panels are very slimming..

Simplysally · 15/03/2009 17:41

I wore a black dress to my cousin's wedding, with my strappy pink stilletos.

You should wear what you're comfortable in, as you'll be spending a long time in your outfit .

bratnav · 15/03/2009 17:42

Definitely - see my profile pics

BirdyArms · 15/03/2009 19:53

Definitely fine, particularly if you've accessorised with bright colours.

sammysam · 16/03/2009 07:41

oooo-i love that dress hattsmum-shame there is no chance my pg tummy will fit in it
Thanks bratnav by the way your girls and puppy are gorgeous!

I'll have to see what I can find in my limited shopping time on sat in a very small town-I've ordered the shoes so will take them with me and will try and find a dress with some colour in it or else i'm going with black and bright accessories.

The other prob is that i'm too small for maternity clothes but too big for my normal clothes or any of the really nice fitted dresses I had my eye on.......anyone know where I can find the perfect inbetween dress?
