Best detangling spray for dds' unruly hair?

Diege · 14/03/2009 10:38

Have been battling with this for a few weeks now, and it's adding at least 20 mins onto our morning routine!
All 3 dds have long-ish hair, and wake up in morning with what can only be described as matted clumps of hair, despite it being brushed before bed. Any tips of the best product to use?

I didn't find any of tham actually helped, DD has waist length frizzy ringlets.

I leave her conditioner on for 10 mins in the bath and then do not rinse all of it out. I never blow dry it and brush it only with a natural bristle brush.

Diege · 14/03/2009 11:32

That's interesting. At the moment we use a 2 in 1 shampoo, so could try conditioner, or maybe a leave in conditioner spray? They only get their hair washed once a week, so wondering if conditioner route only lasts until next day?

i have this problem
someone told me to use satin pillowcases and i amnot kidding - waht a difference ti makes to their hair!

if its still a bit tangled i use one of those plant spray things and in it i put about a quarter leave in conditioner and top it up with water and spray it then brush gently

i wash their hari 3 times a week and use Aussie frizz miracle shamppoo and conditioner

Definatley find a good onditioner that suits your DDs hair. In our case we find Dove to be best...but something else might suit your DDs.

Also regular trimming to keep away dead ends works wonders.

Brush from teh bottom and work upwards

Finally - if we are ina hurry inteh morning I put loose plaits in the night before for them to sleep in.

Sexonlegs · 14/03/2009 11:39

I have found the sprays quite good tbh, but what has been fab, has been a product that was on Dragon's Den. It is called a Tangle Teezer brush and is about 10 GBP.

Marvellous invention

MarmadukeScarlet · 14/03/2009 11:41

I only wash once a week too

Never brush when wet

as SMS, start at bottom and work up.

plaits before bed deffo, in fact we do plaits most days as stops it getting really tangled.

Always plait before bed. Always - even if the beg.

Diege · 14/03/2009 11:47

Soem great tips, many thanks . I suppose it was never going to be as easy as spraying some miracle product on, but will def try the conditioner/plaits/brushing tips. I suppose they should get a trim too - must have been at least 4 months .
SEXONLEGS, any idea where I can get one of those brushes from?

try the satin pillowcases too! honestly its brilliant
i got some on ebay

littlelamb · 14/03/2009 11:54

I use the Loreal kids spray on dd- it has a green bottle and smells liek pears. She has the wildest hair I have ever seen, without the spray it looks like we just don't brush it! We have tried everything, even frizz ease and straighteners when we got desperate before a big wedding

Diege · 14/03/2009 11:54

Yes, I think I will. I'll have a look on e-bay and may even get one for myself! Do they cost the earth?

OP posts:
nailpolish · 14/03/2009 11:55

iirc i got 2 for under a tenner on ebay
they are pink - cos it is for 2 small girls - not really my taste but who cares! good luck

littlelamb · 14/03/2009 11:55

Also, it might be worth gettign it cut. I was so against it with dd as her hair grows so slowly but she had a haircut at Toni and Guy just over a year ago and her hair has been better since. They gave it a really nice bob and I think taking some length off did help to tame it.

Diege · 14/03/2009 11:56

Will have a look for that one too LITTLELAMB. I've come to the point where I even resorted to cutting out a clump of poor dd3's last week (other 2 looking on aghast ). Am pregnant with no.4 who is a boy, so hopefully not so much of an issue hair-wise, although I do favour the surf-dude look over the clippers...

Paul Mitchell (I think that is the name) do a really good one which is available through hairdressing salons - it wipes the floor with the L'Oreal ones you get in the supermarket.

DD has very fine straight hair which gets so knotty if ig goes longer than her shoulders so we keep it in a chin length bob and that helps along with the spray and a conditioner for fine hair.

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 14/03/2009 16:36

Diege - don't be fooled into thinking boys hair is easier . I have two little surf dudes The eldest of which has beautiful ringlets......when its just been washed and condition and combed through. However, having slept on it the poor kid looks like he has been dragged through several hedges backwards, forwards and sideways!

We did use the L'Oreal spray too for a while and it does work for when you are in a real rush. However, like the others, finding a really good shampoo and conditioner which totally suits your DDs hair is the way to go.

We also bought a very wide-toothed comb to use on DS1 together with a ceramic barrel brush (which calms down the static in the hair, makes it lie flatter and therefore reduces tangling).

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 14/03/2009 16:40

Boots leave in coconut and almond conditioning spray. Much much better than detangling spray. I also second the plaits at night thing - it is VITAL imo.

grouchyoscar · 14/03/2009 16:40

I don't know if it has been mentioned but Tesco's Kids hair detangler is very good. I have curly hair and I use it to avoid looking like an exploded mattress

Sexonlegs · 15/03/2009 13:54

Apologies Diege, we have been away, so I didn't get back to you! You have probably found one now. e-bay shops is where we found it I think, and it was about 10 quid.

claireybeemine · 15/03/2009 14:02

Definitely the tangle teezer-it works on dd's mixed race hair.

2 in 1 shampoos barely condition at all IME. I've found the best way for dd's hair is to use a moisturising shampoo, then a conditioner. Then on the days her hair isn't washed I spray it with either a mixture of olive oil and water or a leave in conditioner. I also have a cream for the ends of dd's hair but that is probably overkill for your dds

claireybeemine · 15/03/2009 14:03

Can get the tangle teezer in Boots btw

twinklylights · 15/03/2009 16:57

My dd has got reasonably curly, very long hair and absolutely HATES it being de-tangled. However, have found some excellent kid's de-tangling spray for about 99p in Superdrug(has got a funny little monster on the front)and together with a wide toothed comb makes things a lot less fraught!

motherlovebone · 15/03/2009 16:58

i was going to say NOT the Paul Mitchell, found it to be useless (our hair not fine though)
Loreal kids one is good (heard they are a shady company though, it was a prezzy)
the superdrug own brand is shit not all that.
using leave in conditioner at the mo, but seems to make hair a fluff and fibre magnet!

RamblingRosa · 16/03/2009 09:22

I use the L'oreal one on DD but her hair's still crazy. She got the crazy hair gene from me .
