Going out clothes

Hello I would like some advice on what to wear when going out for an evening. I live in jeans during the day and generally like what I wear, but when it comes to going out I have nothing. What is worse is that I am starting to turn down invitations because I have nothing/ or can't see myself dresed up.

If DH and I get to go out I suggest something low key just to avoid dressing up.

Terrible I know...please help. I am 5ft 8, 12 to 14 with curves.

Thank you

I'm a similar size/shape to you and I quite like tunic dresses with opaques and heels. I don't feel too over dressed in them and feel comfortable but smarter than in my day clothes (usually jeans as well)

something like this

I also have a really good pair of "best" jeans and a couple of dressier tops that I wear a lot

or this

thankyou - I think you gave me some good advice before when I was fretting over which dress to wear to a wedding TSM! I think the monsoon dress is lovely - would skinny jeans be better (I normally stick to bootcut/curvy jeans from Gap)

I personally don't do skinnies - I just don't feel they are very "me" tbh. It sounds daft but I've got quite big feet and they always make me look like a golf club I love them on other people though, so they might be worth a go.

I invested in a pair of 7 for all mankind jeans (boot cut) and they make me feel fabulous.

I think I have probably avoided them for the same reasons!!

buy one dress that you love, something classic and flattering that you can wear summer and winter, and that makes you feel fab. this way you'll never have a crisis of having nothing to wear, and you don't need to constantly update it. Then accessorise it with different boots/shoes/jewellary when you go out. have you checked out bravissimo dresses if you're curvy- this is stunning in both colours and also stunning

Actually, I think I could wear that...doesn't come in black by any chance?

Think also that is the problem - I panic buy something to wear of an evening, spend most of the night not feeling comfortable, and never wear it again.

I need 'a style'

ok, if you're uncomfortable in a radical look for an evening then just change your daytime look for smarter versions of the same.

Nice beaded top over smart dark jeans (kept for best), medium heel, fabulous swingy accessories

naomi83 · 13/03/2009 07:24

don't go for black! all in one block colour is also very flattering, will mke you feel fab and is very "in" right now. if you're scared of too strong colour the bavissimo purple one is beautiful and not in your face

Ok so dark jeans and a nice top are suitable for causal nights out (ie resturants not that posh)

Any examples of 'nice' tops?

Also I am hopeless with accessories, I wear the same earings (diamond studs) and wedding jewellery all the time...

It's the idea of keeping for best...think we've been through a phase of really not going out that much, so buying something and not wearing it again seems a waste. Classic is best but ?? boring?

Something like this with a little shrug if you'd be more comfortable.

or something not so dressy

Jewellery wise, I'm not massively adventurous. I don't tend to do earrings or bracelets but I do have a few necklaces in various colours to go with things. Places like Sainsburys and M&S have a surprisingly good choice and aren't too pricey
