have had a fringe for 42 years....should I grow it out?!

I have always had a fringe and am tempted to grow it out. I'm having my hair cut and coloured on Tursday so now would be agood time to go for it.

Any tips or advice?

My hair is just about shoulder length - originally blonde but now lots of grey I guess if it was natural.

I also have a stupid cowslick think which means that I always have to have a side parting - this is the bit I'm worried about if I do grow the fringe out as I think it might make my forehead look enormous...

Please help!

How about just a side fringe to start with so it's a more gradual process?

Fringes do make you look younger, by hiding any lines on your forehead and emphasising your eyes. Try gripping it straight back for a few days if you can, and look in various mirrors to see if you like the effect. Agree though a side fringe is a less severe way of going fringe-free (but it could annoy the hell out of you, always swiping it away!)

what do you mean by a side fringe? (stupid emoticon) does that just mean a long fringe which is swept over? The cowslick means that I have that anyway but my fringe has always been short

I read the thread title as "I've had a fridge for 42 years, should I grow it out?", and thought that you'd just mis-typed "throw it out!"

Was going to tell about my mum's ancient fridge, but... as you were.

Mimsy2000 · 09/03/2009 12:13

why not grow it out - you can always cut it if you don't like it!

nappyaddict · 09/03/2009 12:46

here is a short side fringe. Is yours similar to that? here is a longer side fringe although I personally think the long piece by her nose should be over the other side.

Tommy · 09/03/2009 13:05

thanks - my fringe is like the short side fringe (and I am obviously as glamorous as that too )

I think I like the idea of a longer fringe to sweep over in a glamorous way but I'm not sure the stupid cowslick lends itself to it much.
I'm worried I mught end up like this

I grew my fringe out a few years ago because of my cowslick. I can't have a fringe without wetting it down (every day really). It's been great to just get-up-and-go.
Recently I'm missing the fringe though.......I've got wrinkles on my forehead, and I know I'd look younger with a fringe.
Just don't know if I can be arsed with it.

Tommy · 09/03/2009 14:27

paisleyleaf - does your hair still part naturally where the cowslick is?

Actually now that the fringe is gone I can part it wherever I like, as it's heavier in weight and will hang down (tis long mind).
