I need a shirt.. A really nice shirt.

I fancy a shirt. I want to look a bit preppy and french and stylish. Not a blouse. A shirt. Maybe striped. Like those women in glossy magazines advertising things on boats with sunglasses on their heads.

I'm a bit norky, a bit overweight. Size 14ish. I don't mind spending a bit.

What's a good brand? What should I look for?

I was even thinking of being brave and going into Ralph Lauren . I've never owned anything from Ralph Lauren. But then I thought I bet all their shirts are for thin people. And also I don't want to pay extra if it's just for the brand.

Joules have some nice shirts. I have this one in french vanilla. At the moment you can get 20% off with the code Hello22.

I am a norky 12-14 I love boden essential shirts, I only usually buy them in the sale though.

[[http://www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/Womens-Shirts/Long-Sleeved-Shirts/WA209/Womens-Essential-S hirt.html Essential shirt.

They are fitted, but nowhere near as much as they look on the model, I think they have pinned it at the back. Very flattering.

dexter73 · 06/03/2009 16:04

Ralph Lauren shirts are really nice too. I have a couple as there is an outlet store near me and they cost £24.99 instead of £60ish. The sizes at the outlet are American so you would need a 10.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 06/03/2009 16:05

Sorry Essential shirt.

Lawks · 06/03/2009 16:12

That joules one is v nice. Possibly a bit heavy. I live in a hot country.

Thomas Pink is on the right track but a bot more officey that boaty (disclaimer: I do not have a boat, nor am I planning on going near one at any point).

Quite surprised that boden looks pretty good. Are they nice quality? Really nice quality? I had to send a skirt back to Boden a few months ago because it was shockingly poor quality, especially for the price. I know some of their stuff is still top notch though.

I thought RL shirts were more than £60.

Boden one very nice quality and attention to detail imo. The code tyou should get you £10 off too, get two.

Lawks · 06/03/2009 16:15

(This is a very important shirt by the way. It is a symbolic shirt. It symbolises my new plan to be Go Getting, and Do Things For Me, and be an Inspriation To My Childen, and Not Leave The House With Marmalade On My Vest)

The Joules shirt is about the same weight as the RL shirts. I have only been in the RL outlet so don't know how much they cost in the shops. On the tags it says rrp is £60 but they may have different levels of price within the brand.

I suggest:

Tommy H

Are you in London? you could try the Abercrombie store, although is ridiculous price compared to US.

abercrombie

Galava · 06/03/2009 16:43

TK Max

Ralph Lauren shirts are £20 instead of the £100 tag

I love them they are tailored in a nice way and wash really well.

Galava · 06/03/2009 16:43

I wear mine with a Boden tank top

Lawks · 06/03/2009 16:56

Was on board with the Boden, but they're all floral or spotty. Not preppy enough.

What sort of shape are you Galava?

Another vote for Crew - I bought a lovely striped shirt from them a couple of months ago.

Jack Wills also good although their sizes looked a little on the skinny side.

krugerparkrules · 06/03/2009 20:03

agnes b do lovely shirts as well as paul smith .... (if you were going to spend a little) Can vouch for both their quality, lovely little touches and design bits.

Rollmops · 06/03/2009 20:20

Ralph Lauren shirts are nice, Apriori (Escada's sub-label) does very nice smart casual stuff. Try DKNY, some of their stuff is lovely. Prada has nice shirts and so does Gucci if you're after timeless classic white crisp shirt with great detail.
