Wow three links so quickly!

The brief is that the ruby must be a great big one!

Those all seem small...............

KatyMac · 03/03/2009 21:58

oops cross post

Have you looked on Etsy? They have loads of wonderful jewellery, all handmade and beautiful and unusual. Not necessarily appropriate if your mum wants something v traditional but if you think she'd like something unusual and possibly unique then it's worth having a look.

How about
these?

or these?

and these?

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 03/03/2009 22:15

Yurtgirl......when you say you want something "really big".....I think for £200 your choices are limited tbh.

Did you have any particular design in mind?

Have you thought about going to an independent designer that will design things for you?

Yurtgirl · 03/03/2009 22:41

I know mrsjohnsimm - The trouble is my Mum jokes about a big rock! I am trying to chose it - my dad if left to his own devices wont buy anything at all

So I have got to chose something possibly suitable and then try and persaude him to buy it - she will be estatically happy

All is well!

This one is currently on the possibly definate list

Yurtgirl - TheRealMrsJohnSimm has a point with her suggestion of an independent designer - they're really not that scary!
To kick off, why not give this woman a call: julia cook. You may not like the sort of things she does, and decide she's not to your mum's taste (she is modern and unusual - in a good way, but it may not be your mum's way). However, it may help you get an idea of what's out there.
You can look at the website but the thing is, as an independent, she will make jewellery to your specification (though still in her style).
Julia may not be to your taste, but I'm sure others will come on this thread and you can click through and find someone who is. And you may end up getting something that is exactly what you want - and within your budget.

cherryblossoms · 04/03/2009 10:10

Btw - no. 3 on that website is a ruby necklace.

Yurtgirl · 04/03/2009 12:02

Nice bags RinkyDinkyPinky! The necklace in the second list is £1000 - no way will my Dad go for that!

Cherryblossoms -I cant get your Julia cook link to work

You are right I should perhaps consider a designer

I have asked my mum whether she wants to help choose so no doubt she will have an opinion!

Life would be so much easier if my Dad would do all this himself

I agree with others that if you want a single stone/ simple, elegant setting on a simple chain (and probably more beautiful that way too) go to an independant jeweller who will be able to source and offer a range of sizes/ qualities of stone and will work within your buget.

I remember being in my local good jeweller and the lady next to me was getting an emerald ring designed. Out popped a tray full of emeralds of all shapes and sizes from which she could chose the most suitable. Think grown up candy store!!

Wizzska · 04/03/2009 17:29

or you could get one made up, I've done this before. They do the setting for you for about a fiver.

here

cherryblossoms · 04/03/2009 17:59

Yurtgirl - the link works for me. Did you press on the word "jewels"? Maybe my computer is just being extra special good today and the link doesn't work for anyone else.
