As spring approaches the perennial tights question rears its ugly head...

Can sheer/nude tights ever look nice? Personally I have always thought they look awful but there comes a point when neither white legs or black opaques look right either.

Any thoughts, MN fashionistas?

I think there's a time and place for them even though I know they're meant to be a huge crime against fashion. I think they have to be super sheer (7 denier) and matt. Shiny ones are just awful. They should look like nude legs rather than dodgy old Nora Batty tights! I wouldn't wear them with a very short skirt but I would wear them with a knee length skirt and boots so you can't really see that much skin anyway...just gives a bit of extra warmth. M&S do good ones.

HeadFairy · 03/03/2009 15:33

Do you have to do either bare legs or black opaques? I'm very in to my coloured opaques at the moment. Still not very spring like...

naughtymummy · 03/03/2009 15:34

Was wondering the self same thing today. My Mum is having a big 60th party in a couple of weeks, I want to wear quite a spring like outfit so black opaques would definately look odd bare legs would require a vat of duotan and hypothermia ...your thoughts ladies

naughtymummy · 03/03/2009 15:35

HF may try to find some yellow ones....

GetOrfMoiLand · 03/03/2009 15:41

I wear nude tights, however they do have to be decent ones (get mine from House of Fraser) and very, very sheer.

I used to think that wearing tights (coloured or black) with peep toe shoes was a crime beyond reproach, however loads of people do it and I wear peep shoes with tights now - any thoughts?

I still think pop socks are beyond the pale though!

HeadFairy · 03/03/2009 15:43

naughtymummy... some yellow tights for your wearing pleasure. I love the grey ones on the model in the picture too...

naughtymummy · 03/03/2009 15:51

Thank you ordered some in Daffodil so much cooler than granny-tan tights. Though will check out M&S super sheers also. Agree about pop socks-awful and why? Is it to keep things aired down below as my gran would say ?

HeadFairy · 03/03/2009 16:00

Sorry getorfmoiland, I hate seeing tights though the ends of peep toe sandals... I'm sure I remember seeing some tights that are toeless iyswim, just for that purpose... will have a hunt.

sifuentes · 03/03/2009 16:02

HF Hi there - I love coloured tights on other people but so far haveonly dared to use grey. And scared of getting it wrong what with one more thing to match!

What colour tights do you where and with what colour skirts/dresses???

I actually REALLY want to know this so you'd better answer.

HeadFairy · 03/03/2009 16:02

here you go toeless tights, though I wouldn't wear them as they have in the photo.... shouldn't wear any tights with shoes like that IMO... but those are great with peep toe shoes.

HeadFairy · 03/03/2009 16:05

Hi Sif.. I'm not terribly adventurous with my tights I'm afraid, as I've not got the greatest legs. I think if you're waif like, and look like Twiggy or Jean Shrimpton you could really get a great 60s vibe with those grey tights, a shift dress and an asymmetric bob by Vidal Sassoon! I tend to wear dark green tights or burgundy/dark red. Usually with a denim skirt or I've got a really nice brown A line cord skirt I wear. It is all quite autumny/wintery though, not very spring like. I quite like the idea of very bright red tights with a dark denim skirt and cute black patent mary janes, but I think I'm getting on in years for that

missblythe · 03/03/2009 16:06

Nude fishnets may sound foul, and chilly, but actually look good and keep your pins toasty. Try them!

HeadFairy · 03/03/2009 16:09

I have a pair giant red fishnets (in that the hole bits are giant, not that the tights are giant) they're cool too!

HeadFairy · 03/03/2009 16:10

giant red fishnets but the picture shows them in black... dull-o-rama!

HeadFairy · 03/03/2009 16:15

Sif, I'm not young enough or skinny enough to carry this look off but love the colour of these tights, it's not too dissimilar to the ones I've got.

sifuentes · 03/03/2009 16:33

oh my god i would commit genocide for legs like that.

hmmmm anyway. food for thought...thanks!

sifuentes · 03/03/2009 16:40

that does look a tad violent in print...

beanieb · 03/03/2009 17:09

how does a fishnet keep you warm? Do people wear them to work? I am a big fan of coloured tights.

missblythe · 03/03/2009 17:17

It's like a cellular blanket for legs! The little pockets of air warm up and keep you warm. I know it sounds improbable, but it is true!

HeadFairy · 03/03/2009 17:45

Sif, but you know, never mind how fat you are elsewhere, good legs are an asset. You can't suck your legs in like you can your tummy.

It is strange how fishnets can keep you warm, esp the giant fishnets but they do. It's a bit like how flip flops manage to keep your feet warm on chilly summer evenings when really it's just a piece of plastic, but if you take them off your feet are plunged in to freezing cold!

sifuentes · 03/03/2009 18:28

In my next life I am going to have very long thin legs like alexa chung. for now I will make do with dark tights and high heels.

OP posts:
HeadFairy · 03/03/2009 19:03

Blimey sif, you reading my mind. I was pondering this morning who I'd like to look like and I thought of Alexa Chung. She's got cracking legs, looks quirky and unusual as well as being pretty. And she's not a clone of so many other dull dull dull ex model/presenters.

HeadFairy · 03/03/2009 19:04

sorry, I really should have put a question mark after that first sentence.. sorry pedants

Aefondkiss · 03/03/2009 20:24

I don't think sheer tights ever look okay, just my humble o, so it is either black/other opaque or patterned tights or no tights.... is it really warm enough or are you being prepared?

sifuentes · 04/03/2009 09:39

No way - London has taken a turn for the bloody freezing - no i was just daydreaming of warmer days...I have never worn sheer tights and suspect I never will. I will jut resign myself to the fact that there is always a weird time when neither opaque or bare legs will quite too (and continue wearing opaques anyway)

HF It was seeing Alexa C in that Chloe all in one jumpsuit thingy in the Guardian. i will never know what it is like to put on something like that and think 'wow, hot stuff' instead of 'hawhawhawhaw I look like a clown'

sigh...
