After yesterdays excursion to the shops I am getting back to the land of fashion after years in the wilderness.

I have some clubcard vouchers and would like to treat myself to a subscription to a magazine to keep up to date with what is going on in the outside world.

Any favourites?

Can't help you at all re. your query. I tend to read "easy Living", for heaven's sake. [Cherryblossoms realises that fashionistas are snorting wine derisively on their keys at this point.]

Just wanted to say I love your name; "mithering" is one of my all-time favourite words.

Mithered · 26/02/2009 22:15

Are you a northern girl then?

Hmmm I don't think Easy Living was quite what I had in mind

i used to like vogue or Instyle.

Now I read red [middle aged emoticon]

Mummyfor3 · 26/02/2009 22:19

RED magazine??
I like it, although find fashion in it usually far too expensive aspirational.
BTW, I have had it subscribed for last 2 years and am now really getting quite bored with it, but I suppose that can happen with any magazine?

Mummyfor3 · 26/02/2009 22:19

Oh, yes, am v middle aged !

Mithered · 26/02/2009 22:21

What is middle aged then?

The poor man's Grazia "look" magazine. I like that it assumes you want to put the look together from high street shops.

Grazia itself just annoys me. £500 for a white shirt.

I liked Eve and they scrapped it.

I'm cured of magazines now. I used to buy hundreds of them and then within the last two years I just can't face them really.

I am 37 though and I feel too old for most magazines, but the ones aimed at my age bracket, well they are aimed at women who 'have it all' and it's all sewn up with neat stitching! There's no magazine aimed at hopeless 30 somthings still waiting for things to fall into place!!

kettlechip · 26/02/2009 22:32

I liked Eve too! Just found it and then it folded (no pun intended..)

I quite like Grazia, although the prices are eye watering - £28000 for a vile gold watch anyone? I also get Marie Claire, Glamour and occasionally Red.

cherryblossoms · 26/02/2009 22:44

Midlands - which is just-Northern-enough for "mithering".

Just to prove that I'm not completely sad here

(Btw are there any other on-line mags that people recommend? - or does that constitute a thread hi-jack?)

Grazia and Instyle sometime foreign Vogue

MrsSeanBean · 27/02/2009 01:00

I bought Harper's Bazaar the other day (March issue) and it seems better than it used to. Am reserving judgement until have sampled a few more issues though. I went off Vogue a few months ago, it all seems too pie in the sky and couture orientated, with fewer real-life type items.
I can't get 'into' Grazia, it's a bit too dressing-up-box, also I dislike the stories about someone's Mum's affair, or other tragic events - it makes it seem too much like 'Take a Break'.
I read InStyle at the beauty salon the other day, and it seemed quite good, I took a few notes. I find that I always take notes when I read mags in a hair salon etc; but that when I buy them, they invariably end up being a useless waste of money and get tossed aside in disgust.

MrsSeanBean · 27/02/2009 01:04

Another thing which annoys me about Grazia is the way it always seems to have Sienna / Kate / Jen (none of whom I care much about) splashed across the pages with a 'Sun-esque' revelation about their private lives.

ClaudiaSchiffer · 27/02/2009 01:30

I think In-Style offers a good fashion focused but not totally insane balance for a fash mag. I used to like Grazia but agree that it is ABSURD nowadays. Also agree with MrsSB that it is focused on a few women for cover girls and then has a go at them.

BonsoirAnna · 27/02/2009 08:48

Look at Style.com and read Vogue.

Marthasmama · 27/02/2009 08:53

Vogue and Elle. However, I find the fact the I am paying for pages upon pages of adverts very irritating. Both magazines often have a section about the high street's take on designer trends.

macherie · 27/02/2009 10:28

Well this is something I actually know something about

I became obsessed with magazines in my early teens, and started collecting US and UK Vogue, I have every issue of both since March 1983! The collection is so big, we don't have room for it, and most now live in MIL's cellar. They are all catalogued and shelved in order [anal emoticon]

If you are interested in designers, their inspiration and what's realy happening in fashion, the only one worth reading is American Vogue, it is THE magazine.

I think UK Vogue went off the boil a few years ago, but I couldn't bear to not get each edition on the day it comes out, and pour over it while the dc are at school!

Actually, I rate the fashion in Easy Living quite highly, the editor Susie Forbes, used to be at Vogue, and knows her stuff. It has a good mix of aspirational and inspirational, as does Red, although they are both definately aimed at 30+s.

Elle is great for directional fashion mixed with High St. I don't bother with Instyle, or Marie Claire, only buy them if I'm desperate for a magazine.

Harpers Bazaar had a revamp last year, and has improved a lot, but IMO is only worth buying in March & Sept as these are the 'big' fashion issues of the year. Similarly, Grazia is great when the new collections are being shown as they have lots of photos and you can be ahead of the game for next season.
