White Stuff Rant! (my cups overfloweth...)

RinkyDinkyPinky · 25/02/2009 10:28

Just ordered and sent back 3 dresses from White Stuff because there was insufficient fabric in the bust to cover my bra. No, I am not wearing Madonna's virgin tour bra c1980s, nor am I particularly huge of norkage. I am an average size 14 with size 34DD bust. I bought the dresses in a couple of sizes (14 & 16) and all of them were woefully inadequate in this area. The underbust (empire-line) seam sat right on top of my nipple line instead of nicely below the boobs.

If any one from WS is reading this; please understand that you can't just size up from the basic size 8 pattern by making a garment wider: you need to account for changing proportions and curves. The average cup size increases as the dress size increases.

WS garments seem to be cut for the carrot shape! They look great on the hanger but rubbish on a real body like mine.

Other main offenders IMO are Gap and Next.
Right, glad that's off my chest now.

it's something that really bugs me about White Stuff - the clothes look lovely, however given their demographic (which round here certainly seems to be 35+ women with kids) many of the tops are too low-cut as are the trousers

conniedescending · 25/02/2009 10:41

I'm amazed white stuff sell anything. Totally overpriced tat. As is Boden stuff.

RinkyDinkyPinky · 25/02/2009 10:41

Same demographic here, I should think, Mimsum- they're hardly pitching to the teen market. So annoying. I just want a nice casual dress without having to wear a little vest thingy underneath, and without giving everyone an eyeful when I bend over to chase the kids...

Where to buy clothes then Connie? I want smarter than jeans/ relaxed look/ nice without being too scruffy, oh and kid-proof.

Rinky dinky - fat face have some nice dresses and I find the it is good as is the quality

RinkyDinkyPinky · 25/02/2009 10:57

Thanks Connie, but I have the same problem in Fat Face- dresses and tops look lovely on the hangers or on my skinny friends, but just don't fit my curves.

SIL shops at Joe Brown's Rinky. Have you tried them?

RinkyDinkyPinky · 25/02/2009 11:35

I heard poor reports on JB quality here, but not tried yet myself. Would really love to buy from high st where I can try stuff on...

It works both ways though. I have a nice dress from White Stuff which looks awful on me because I haven't got any boobs at all to fill up the bust area. It just gapes open.

muffle · 25/02/2009 11:43

I think it's a length issue as well as a nork-size issue - I only have a C cup but because I'm tall, I often find the under-bust bit cuts my norks in half as well. White Stuff and other brands. It's OK if it's a really stretchy fabric - otherwise awful. And I often love their trousers but they are cut too low at the waist. I add an extra waistband or cut it off and make a new, much deeper one.

kettlechip · 25/02/2009 13:55

I'm a 34dd size 12 and shop at White Stuff all the time (just looked down and realised I am wearing two of their tops layered as I write..) I do tend to wear most things with a vest underneath anyway so not had the issue of them being revealing. Only have one dress from there, and do need to wear a camisole top underneath that as the v is a little low without.

I do think White Stuff clothes are worth the money, imo they're on a par with Fat Face, a slightly smarter version though. Have had some jumpers and skirts for years and they still look as good as when I bought them and don't really date either. Now I sound like my mum!!

MorrisZapp · 25/02/2009 13:58

Totally agree. And I've lost count of the amount of t-shirts/ tops/ henleys from WS, FF and Boden etc that I've had to put back on the hanger due to being too wide at the neck and showing my bra straps.

Most women my age do have to wear a bra! I really don't want my t-shirt neck to be so wide that everybody can see my underwear.

Hulababy · 25/02/2009 14:01

I love a lot of White Stuff clothes and find the quality and sizing fab.

However I do agree some of the tops are too low cut - I think many may be designed to wear with a vest under them perhaps? I am small on top and find the fit fine, but the low cut bit a bit too low.

I think White Stuff are on a par with Fat Face, Monsoon, etc.

MissisBoot · 25/02/2009 17:18

I'm a 34E and size 12 and don't seem to be exposing myself in them...

Can't wear the trousers though as am a short arse.

veryembarrassedmummy · 25/02/2009 19:57

I think they make them low cut so you will buy a cami or vest from them to go under- if you go to their shops, all the displays are of clothes that are LAYERED- so instead of buying just a top, you buy a T shirt, top and cardi etc etc.

Agree they are overpirced- currently wearing a white long sleeve t shirt that was £25- Imust have been mad, but at the time, I couldn't find a white scoop neck anywhere that fit nicely.

PillicockSatOnPillicockHill · 25/02/2009 20:02

well i must be an odd shape then...

i am a 41 yr old size 12 ish still bf but cutting down so boobs probably 34cish

the thing i find is that their trousers are ridiculously sized

I am a 12 bottoms always have been - in WS I am a 10 and bought some coble cords 10L in the sald and they are bloody baggy

their tops however - i am normally 12 sometimes 10 but in WS DEFFO 12

luckily my mate warned me that their sizing was topsy turvy

whoever said 'who shops their?' ' I do!!"
i love their stuff!

PillicockSatOnPillicockHill · 25/02/2009 20:03

i always choose a scoopy neckline though - more flattering imo plus with tank tops atm their is no issue

PillicockSatOnPillicockHill · 25/02/2009 20:04

or a scarf?

duckyfuzz · 25/02/2009 20:07

I like their clothes and don't find them that badly priced, I do agree about dress necklines but noticed the brochure shows camis under them, as has been emntioned, so I think I will get a couple - they have free postage on at the moment

PillicockSatOnPillicockHill · 25/02/2009 20:10

i often wear a vest under also out of choice
