Please help - Big hips, Big boobs, little waisted shortie....what is my style?

Please help.

I haven't a blardy clue and am sick of jeans and t-shirt.

I have an exaggerated hourglass shape but no clothes at 5ft 3. this is usually defined as petite in lots of shops (although it is bang on average), but petite clothes tend to be designed for teeny-boned people.

Lycra used to be my friend because it would fit well (obviously) and my hips and bust would shorten the clothes.

However, after 2 kids, and a fair bit of extra weight, lycra truly isn't my friend.

Can anyone help?

tia

ahem

Wrap around dresses would look great on you

samsonara · 24/02/2009 22:38

I think Nigella's styling might suit you.
1.fitted jumper or top with a v-neck or scoop neck and then an A-line skirt like
here

  1. same colour v-neck scoop top with a fitted jacket and a long skirt that skims the hips and tapers and then flares out just above the ankleshere
3.Patterned dresses with cute little cardigans here

I'll look for some links to give you ideas

YouLukaConfused · 24/02/2009 22:39

It sounds like you look great!
Sorry no tips though

If you don't mind me asking... What dress size are you?

Your figure sounds similar to mine. Big boobs (34d/dd), small-ish waist but wide hips. I'm a size 12 but often find that tops pull across my boobs. Trousers and skirts will gape on the waist band but fit nicely on my hips. Is this a problem you have too?

Staggerlee is right about wrap dresses. This one from Bravissimo is similar to a wrap dress and would look great dressed down with boots. Or what about a shirt dress.

Another wrap dress here. If you find the wrap dress is a little too revealing across the boobs then you can wear a little vest top underneath.

1.top
2.jumper
3.skirt
4.wrap dress
5.dress
6.dress
7.dress

Devils Yes I look just like that, but a midget version.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I have some really good ideas to try out the next time I go shopping now.

However, Bravissimo and some of the suggestions are for people much taller than me. I am short from boob to shoulder so some of those tops would have my boobs totally hanging out, although I could try a vest top underneath (with knots tied in the shoulder straps as usual) as suggested.

Thank you again.

You sound a smilar shape to me - am 5'2" and a size 12 with 32E bust but a small waist (although nowhere near as small as it used to be!). I find that dresses are very difficult to get right, as are trousers that don't gape across the back or be too loose on the waist.

Next (much as I hate it) trousers seem to fit me okay for work, as do M&S Ltd Collection ones. Both seem to be designed with curves in mind.

My personal "style" largely consists of just below the knee skirts (enough to show off slim legs but not "tarty") with camisoles and little fitted cardigans, or with a cami over a v neck fairly fitted jumper. Wrap dresses can work although you may need to try lots and lots on before finding one that does work.

Avoid tunics which could easily a) swamp you and b) because they hide your slim waist make you look bigger than you are.

For work, pencil skirts with a tank top worn over a shirt or long sleeved t-shirt can look good: the tank top helps with nork issues! I especially like the Vivienne Westwood-esque pencil skirts with frill or pleat details at the bottom or back.

I'm not sure even whay dress size I am tbh. It could be anything quite frankly, between a size 10 and 16.

Hipster are THE WORST, because the hip bit is always in line with my waist, making the gap even bigger.

I'm currently a 34G (bfing) and my hips are around 40 inches (so I wouldn't say my legs are slim although they are fairly shapely so don't mind showing a bit, - but my waist is 28.

I think that's why separates could well be much easier than dresses - eg: I am probably really a size 13 on top because of norks but an 11 on the bottom - buying separates makes it a bit easier to cater for the differences!
