I need a frock but I'm fussy...

Dreaded wedding season is starting early, got a few weeks to get hunting but can anyone help me?

I want a pretty dress, something feminine, but I want to cover my arms (or at least the top of them) and my knees. I've got horrible scars all over my knees from lots of surgery so I don't really want them out. I'm tall, so even dresses that aren't meant to flash my knees do. I've also got large norks so can't have anything too fussy up top, no big sleeves/fussy detailing on the boobs. I'm a size 16 (hoping to be nearer a 14 soon )

Does such a dress exist?

Budget isn't irrelevant but I'll pay up to say £150... perhaps a bit more for a knock out dress.

A bolero or wrap would cover your arms and allow the option of say a strapless prom dress, 3/4 length, I got a lovely one from TK Maxx 3 yrs ago that has seen me through about 4 weddings (diff people!). A straight line across the bust would show off your assets nicely. No idea where to go for such a dress - Coast or Monsoon perhaps? My SIL always looks great and shops at Coast, Oasis, Warehouse for dresses.

Men have it easy when it comes to dressing don't they...

yeah, I don't mind going down the wrap/bolero route if I have to (why on earth don't they make nice dresses with sleeves?) but none of the prom style dresses I've seen will reach my knees and cover my hideous scars. I don't really want to wear a maxi dress as they tend to make me feel a bit frumpy.

Is this too short?

Penthesileia · 23/02/2009 22:07

I like this red dress: mid-length sleeves, and, depending on the height of the model, over the knees too.

What's with the model though??

Danceaway · 23/02/2009 22:07

What about getting one made? No experience in this whatsoever but if you have a £150 budget you might be able to find a design a good dressmaker could copy and make up to the right length for you.

samsonara · 23/02/2009 22:09

This is pretty, length should be ok on you and you could add a light coloured wrap if you think it's too dark
dress

samsonara · 23/02/2009 22:11

That is a good one Penthesileia

Danceaway · 23/02/2009 22:12

Oo lovely. Like the cerise wrap on that site too and good price. Just need to grow now!!

blametheparents · 23/02/2009 22:15

This is nice, and I often find Monsoon comes to a nice length on me (I'm 5'11")

Another possibility

blametheparents · 23/02/2009 22:17

This shrug might go nicely with the chocolate and turquoise dress I linked to above

Tillyscoutsmum · 23/02/2009 22:20

looks quite long ? with a wrap

maybe ?

black

any here ??

HeadFairy · 24/02/2009 20:44

sorry for the delay in replying, busy day with ds and then pancake duty beckoned! Lots of lovely suggestions everyone, I've tried a few Monsoon ones and they all seem to stop at my knees and I'm so paranoid about my scars I would rather the dress came just below my knees. Lots of lovely ones on the Phase 8 website, I've got a Phase 8 near me, I might have to spend a couple of hours trying them on.
