RIGHT...come and talk to me about tights - is there a comfortable alternative?

I hate them! They never seem to stay up and highlight your muffin top, not a good look. I've tried hold-ups a few times and they didn't stay up. I'm now wondering about stockings and suspenders but can't quite bring myself. Are they comfy? I don't wear very short skirts so no-one will see them. Has anyone found hold ups that stay up or wears stockings regularly?

Hold ups fall down. Stockings good but chilly! Why not try a different brand of tights? Go to John Lewis and ask the nice ladies to help you.

JamSandwichCream · 22/02/2009 11:21

LOL! I did wonder about the chilliness! I noticed that with hold-ups. Also I wonder if I would live in fear of my skirt blowing up

Hee hee- hold ups would be much more embarrassing!

mrsmaidamess · 22/02/2009 11:25

If your tights don't stay up you may be wearing the wrong size. My tights never fall down, and do a superb job of keeping the muffins strapped down. Its probably worth spending a bit longer choosing and maybe a bit more for better quality with more lycra in?

Flightattendant27 · 22/02/2009 11:25

LoL, I thought you were the tights troll for a minute!

I think stockings far less convenient or comfortable ime

Get tights with a really high waist. Works for me. Right up to your armpits

mileniwmffalcon · 22/02/2009 11:26

a suspender belt will highlight a muffin top much more than the waistband on tights imho. are you getting the right size tights? i only have a falling down issue with tights when i have a size too small. are you particularly tall?

my problem with stockings (rather than holdups) is that they don't come in anything like the variety that tights do. you're pretty much stuck with sheers, although after a long hunt i did manage to find some black opaques the other day. m&s used to do them but don't any more.

i find holdups work great the first time i wear them but not afterwards, i think it's something to do with the sticky strips losing their sticky. have been over them with sellotape but that doesn't quite get them back. i think unless you have pipecleaner legs that aren't much wider at the top than the bottom then holdups just don't hold up. could use a suspender belt with them i suppose?

JamSandwichCream · 22/02/2009 11:28

You're probably right, it's the rolls of flab skin over the top of them that makes them soooooo attractive. I might try John Lewis (those ladies are very nice...) or maybe I'll be brave and get some stockings, are they comfortable, suspenders look a bit itchy?!

Tights are much more snuggly. I heart tights.

JamSandwichCream · 22/02/2009 11:32

The problem I have is that I'm only 5ft tall so according to the back of the packs I should always wear small (or occasionally medium) but I'm a curvy size 12 and then I find they don't stay up, my opaque M & S ones are the worst offenders. Grrrr, I don't particularly think I am a weird shape though.

Where do you get these up to the armpits tights flight?

OP posts:
Flightattendant27 · 22/02/2009 11:36

Ah well i was going to say M&S 60d opaque, as I'm wearing mine now and they are well high

But obv it is a matter of individuality!!!

Flightattendant27 · 22/02/2009 11:37

I get large or x large as despite being a 10/12 i have bigggg feet and all tights have tiny feet. So I get longer ones to compensate.

cornsilk · 22/02/2009 11:38

(John Lewis)

JamSandwichCream · 22/02/2009 11:41

Ok Cornsilk, I cave. Bluewater next week

Hold ups for me.

Tights are a nightmare - I have a sticky out arse and it means that they are always the wrong fit.

princessmel · 22/02/2009 11:50

I agree with getting larger sizes. I am a size 10/12 and get size L. I am 5"7.

They always stay up fine

I love my Primark tights. I have royal blue, peacock blue , purple, black and grey. I especially like my knittted ones.

TomNook · 22/02/2009 12:23

Leggings.
I wear leggings with mini skirts and boots

Flamesparrow · 22/02/2009 12:37

I have the same arse issue with leggings lately. Maybe I need maternity leggings or summat?

higgle · 22/02/2009 12:45

If you wear stockings - and there is lots of choice, including wool and patterns around - you need 6 strap suspenders for security and comfort ( and they are quite sexy in a matronly sort of way too ) - see Stockings HQ site.

TrillianAstra · 22/02/2009 12:50

I cycle (nearly) everywhere so get too chilly in hold-ups unless it's a special occassion.

If your tights aren't staying up they are almost definitely too short for you, so you need a bigger size. I don't think any adult-sized person can actually wear S tights.

I'm a similar size to princessmel, which equates to L in tights so the gusset doesn't hang down by the knees, but a M in holdups because otherwise the tops are too wide.

cmotdibbler · 22/02/2009 21:30

Glad to see another StockingsHQ buyer !

I have the 6 strap suspender belt and its fantastic - no muffin top as it holds it all in too. And sized stockings mean that they aren't chilly.

Not scratchy either, and very comfortable.
