Help. Dressing for the temperature - I'm totally rubbish

...After a five months of winter, I've no concept of what 15 degrees centigrade is like at all.

What do I need to be digging out of storage boxes please? It's for some holiday packing.

Is there a borderline-obsessive scale on the net anywhere that goes...?

0 degrees - Duvet coat and snowboots

to

40 degrees - Stay indoors wearing little, sipping cocktails

'twould be handy

You know what they're all going to say don't you - LAYERS.
Vest tops, camisoles with wrap tops/ cardis over so you can take off/ put on.

I think long sleeve top personally but I am also rubbish.

I guess my key concerns are:

  1. Is it remotely a summer skirt temperature?
  2. Will the poolside goose-pimple count be too high to bother?
  3. Tights?
  4. Footwear? - I can probably pack 2 pairs, tops, and travel in something sturdier.

LOVE your user name.

And yup, layers, layers, layers. Take at least one pair of open style shoes (ie can be worn without socks).

If you're going somewhere nice, do what I do, and pack inadequately. That way you have to go shopping when you get there.

Heh, heh!

Fwiw I can wear denim skirt/ Birkenstock combo when it's about 13 degrees and up. Ie, not long from now, even in Edinburgh!

My style is to wear a skirt but have a hoodie on hand to cosy up in.

For someone who lives in a regular 24 degrees, 15 sounds darn chilly to me! I'd wrap up warm if i were you.

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 20/02/2009 16:57

I don't think 15 degrees is summer skirt temperature! Even if the sun is shining!! I would go for trousers/jeans with (sorry.....) layers on top

enraha · 20/02/2009 18:38

Oh. In-betweeny weather. Just what I feared.

The problem with layers for me (useful though they are), is that despite excellent intentions, packing-economy goes out of the window, as I gaily match short-sleeves and long-sleeves with cardis, shirts, sweaters etc. The pile-up on the bed is a complete catastrophe. A fashionable one of course

The art of the capsule wardrobe is totally lost on me.

okay well what you need to do is ensure you take "good value" items. So you only take 2 cardigans but each one goes with at least three of your holiday outfits - so you don't feel like you are wearing same clothes every day. You take say a skirt which can be dressed up for evening and down for day. You take one great pair of jeans ditto.

Have stolen this shamelessly from Gok Wan's advice that you should only buy items that go with at least 3 other items in your existing wardrobe (except for special one-off occasion pieces). I was always a packing disaster too but have been pleased with how little I've taken away with me the last two holidays using this advice.

15 degrees is two inside layers and a medium weight jacket weather. Shoes rather than boots, unless they are very light soled boots.

So: you need outfits with a thin sweater and a tunic over, or a dress and cardigan. Tights of course if you are wearing a dress or skirt.
