Boden Sassy Jersey Dress - anyone tried the thing on?

It's this one. It's Empire line, which is a good thing with my kangaroo pouch full of stretchmarks experienced and more mature body, apparently suits curvy boobs (still BF) and skims the problem areas - apparently. But who knows? I've been burnt by Boden before. Has anyone tried this, and how was it? I'm a 16 (ok, Boden thinks I'm an 18 according to their measurements ) by the way.

I would love to know too as I am pretty much same size and have been eyeing this dress up. Need to disguise my wobbly tummy though. Please has anyone tried it?

InTheScrum · 18/02/2009 23:37

Ooh, I like!!
What colour do you like?

MamaHobgoblin · 18/02/2009 23:46

I think I like it in purple but am dithering about blue... I've had a few disappointing experiences with Boden, and they're not exactly cheap, so I wondered if anyone who isn't the size 8 model in the photo had tried it on!

i ordered it in black and sent it back. Shapeless and therefore not v flattering. I definitely wouldn't order one size up if you're tempted to do that, it's not got enough shape to work well that way.

GeneHuntsMistress · 21/02/2009 11:52

hello mumsnet virgin here so go easy with me

my pastime seems to be trying every Boden dress ever created and then sending back.....so i can tell you with some good authority that what you should order is the Double Layer Dress. I am a size 12 but with a disproportionately moohoosive gut that i spend my life trying disguise.

ok this dress is great, it's got an extra panel around the waist which is just ruching, so it helps define the area but you can't tell which is rolls of material and which is rolls of flab you know? Makes the jugs look fatastic so what more can you want

the sassy dress is real cheap fabric and seems to bell out over the belly making it look worse (well for me anyway). get a free delivery code and you can check it all out yourself .....no wait, that's my hobby

veryembarrassedmummy · 21/02/2009 11:56

I had my eye on the Doube Layer Dress- Jigsaw did one similar for years- maybe they will bring it out again this year- but what put me off with the Boden one is thelength- at 5' 3" it will be way too long- I like knee length or just above and jersey is pants to alter.

GeneHuntsMistress · 21/02/2009 12:07

it really is a good flattering dress VEM, looks and feels great on esp if one has really enormous belly issues lik me. BUT you're absolutely right re: the length - i'm 5'7" and usually go for the long length in Boden to go just on or just over the knee when moving so it looks good with boots. But i had to get this dress in Regular length so it sits just above the knee, thst extra inch or 2 made the difference between check out the yummy mummy and look at that woman in thye granny dress

hope these madwoman ramblings help someone, i spend my life trying to find clothes that will hide the pregnant looking belly so i'm always on the lookout myself for good wrap type dresses

Molesworth · 21/02/2009 12:09

I have a mad out of proportion belly as well GHM. Look like a man wearing a rubber ring - ALL the weight goes there and nowhere else. Sheesh.

GeneHuntsMistress · 21/02/2009 12:39

hey moles, it's my life's work. Two things i have found is diversion (i.e. get the focus on to the jugs instead and hope no one looks below.... and the other thing is similar in that only hide the belly but highlight everything else. Not sure this is making sense what i mean is, the baggy shapeless tops etc i used to wear in my longgone youth just makes the rest ofyou look as big as the gut, so don't go there.

What works for me is A line knee length skirts (Boden very good forthese and i can wear them with knee boots in winter and birks in summer) with a wrap top, or vest cardigan etc - basically make sure the top is fitted. Then the skirt (being A line) skims ovefr the top of the gut. Wrap dress exactly same theory. Basically make sure there is no clingy fabric on the underneath of the belly, that way no-one really sees what is flab and what is the cut of the dress?

and i have jus totally given up with jeans, actually trousers of all sorts, even though i never ever wore skirts yeas ago and lived in jeans. I jus feel more comfortable and look less bellified in skirts/dresses. If you do though, make sure they are high waisted for gut holding purposes and never ever tuck anything in.

what else....oh yes nothing empire line. (She says after wearing this style for many years ) n0 matter what any fashion editor may tell you, they make you look pregnant (a look with which i do not need any assistance ).

hth, these things work for me anyway - honestly i reslly do look 5 or 6 months pregnant when in the buff but this style really disguises things

poppy34 · 21/02/2009 12:42

am with thalia - I ordered similar thing last year and it was deeply unflattering -genehunts mistress is right it does make you look pregnant. And agree that boden dresse very hit and miss -wrap ones ok and more fitted one but the hippy ones (llike their unstructured knitwear) are to be avoided.

Molesworth · 21/02/2009 12:46

Oh dear, I live in jeans and never wear skirts or dresses

Mind you, I have the additional problem of having stick legs and big flipper-like feet, so I always feel like a standard lamp in skirts.

Having said all that I do like wearing skirts/tights/boots in the winter, but haven't been able to find a really nice skirt recently.

Totally agree about the perils of the empire line!

Complete wardrobe rethink required, methinks. Thanks GHM

Oovavu · 21/02/2009 12:52

got a great double layer dress from monsoon in the sale for £13.50 a few weeks ago. It had a kind of 'knot' in the front under the bust and fabric gathered and hung from there .

The knotty bit stopped it from being all pregnanty-looking. I too have mahoooosive gut.

(GeneHuntsMistress - has MrsGeneHunt found you yet - she'll kill you! )

MamaHobgoblin · 21/02/2009 21:44

Oh bum. I'm quite attatched to that dress now. Might check out the double layer one, but am 5'2"! I know empire line can make you look pregnant, but in my case, I don't mind if it's in a nice way, IYSWIM? No? Maybe I have style ishoos...

Would like to find an ideal wrap dress that I can dress up or down. Ones that actually fit flatteringly are so hard to find though.
