Drinking Water Yuck!

May I ask please...How on earth does anyone enjoy drinking copious amounts of water, for the health associated benefits? I loath it; it takes my breath away if it's chilled and is nasty if not. All suggestions to encourage me would be greatly appreciated. BTW, I know I have to drink more, I look decidedly lack-lustre (dry skin, hair etc....)

i have to drink alot on my Cambridge diet and i have to have the water flavorings maybe you can get something similar?
i HATE HATE HATE water on its own!!!

misscat · 17/02/2009 20:50

When you say water flavourings, is this something specific or do you just mean squash type things? I am not fan of cordials and squashes, although I don't mind elderflower at a push. Tea and coffee don't count do they? I'm a lost cause - I knew it! Why do they state just water, it's so boring!

Put a few slices of lemon thinly sliced in a mug. Top up with hot water. Drink hot/warm/cold or however you like it.

I have read various conflicting things about what counts or doesn't. Personally I count the odd mug of decaff, imo it is a large mug full of hot water that just happens to have a teaspoon of coffee granules in it.

samsonara · 17/02/2009 20:59

I use a Sigg bottle to keep water in and it really does keep it tasting cool and freshly drawn.

Furball · 17/02/2009 21:17

have you tried a brita filter? It really does IMO make the water taste of nothing

Countingthegreyhairs · 17/02/2009 21:25

For everyone that finds water difficult to "get down" this recipe is really good:

SASSY WATER

2 litres/31/2 pt water
1 tsp freshly grated ginger
1 medium cucumber, peeled and thinly sliced
1 medium lemon, thinly sliced
12 mint leaves
Combine all ingredients in a large jug, chill in the refrigerator and let the flavours blend overnight.

The mint and ginger help the digestive system along too ....

PuppyMonkey · 17/02/2009 21:28

I have found it enormously helpful to just get a big pint pot glass, fill it with tap water and do a "down in one" whenever I happen to e passing the sink.... takes a few seconds and is horrid, but you can do it. I have been drinking loads of water for a couple of years now that way....

onepieceofbrusselssprout · 17/02/2009 21:28

That's a salad greyhairs, not a drink.

Countingthegreyhairs · 17/02/2009 21:34

As my waistline will testify Brusselsprout I like to pack in the calories where I can

Countingthegreyhairs · 17/02/2009 21:37

Ok - just thought of another method - get a timer or set your mobile phone alarm and take a few sips of water EVERY 15 minutes throughout the day wherever you are ... you can down a surprising amount that way ...

badgermonkey · 17/02/2009 21:39

You don't HAVE to drink loads of water - the 'eight glasses a day' thing is a myth and you get enough water from your food without having to gulp loads down and hating it.

OrmIrian · 17/02/2009 21:42

I don't know. I just do it. It's like breathing. Air doesn't have to taste nice. You just have to get on with it. Sorry.

But it doesn't have to be water as such. Simply anything that hydrates more than it dehydrates - ie not booze or caffeine.

feetheart · 17/02/2009 21:43

Squeeze of lemon or lime plus a couple of cubes of crystalized ginger with hot water poured over - tastes fine hot, warm or cold.

misscat · 18/02/2009 00:00

I'm in your camp Onepiece! Only my large mug full of hot water has a very generous helping of coffee granules and a spoonful of sugar!
I could probably just about stomach the lemon slices!

i find carrying a bottle of water means i drink lots more as its awlays there

misscat · 18/02/2009 00:09

I do like the Sassy Water idea too, could give that a go for sure - pretend it was Pimms!
I've tried the 'down in one' method also. True it's not pleasant but I think it's probably the best and only long term solution. Will begin, in earnest tomorrow, I absolutely promise.
Thanks all for the motivation!
Oh just one more question. Once I have embarked on this regime, does the persistent peeing gradually cease? Another downside, I find, especially if I'm going out for the day!

Drink when you are thirsty or if your urine starts looking an orangey colour. Otherwise no need to drink water at all. There are also dangers in drinking too much. Think it's called hypotronia or something like that.

misscat · 18/02/2009 00:14

OMG ! Will have to google that one robinia. Still think I need to drink something other than coffee during the day though.

This was said in an obstetric context:

Professor Philip Steer, BJOG editor-in-chief said:

?Although it is important to replenish ourselves with liquids, previous studies on athletes have shown that there can be problems with drinking too much water too quickly, even if you are feeling thirsty. At one time, a myth became prevalent that drinking lots of water each day was a healthy habit. However, recent research shows clearly that in general, one can trust one?s natural body messages, and that we only need to drink more when we feel thirsty. Drinking too much water can be as harmful as drinking too little. As this research shows, it is important for doctors and midwives to note how much fluid is drunk by women who are in, or about to go into labour, in order to avoid hyponatraemia.?

As you can see the word I was looking for was hyponatraemia

purplemonkeydishwasher · 18/02/2009 10:00

brush your teeth or eat a mint before you drink water. water always tasted best when my mouth is minty.

and you get used to it. i used to hate it. but can drink loads now. it helps if you find a brand of bottled water that you like. my preference is highland spring.

SilentTerror · 18/02/2009 11:44

I keep a glasss by the sink and fill it up regularly. Now drink loads, but keep going to the loo!

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 18/02/2009 11:52

Sainsburys do an amazing elderflower and raspberry cordial, I make it really weak and drink loads of it.

I really like plain water though, nothing like it when you are thirsty, but I filter it as London water is horrible.

EustaciaVye · 18/02/2009 12:35

We recently tried grape and mango high juice. Very nice.

Tinker · 18/02/2009 12:38

All drinks count for liquid consumption. Plus the water in your fodd. It's a food myth that you have to drink just water.
