I've lost over 3 stone in weight and am attending a wedding in April. Am well chuffed so am going to treat myself to something really nice for the wedding. Was trying on some things and found that prom dresses seem to suit me best, but definetely not strapless. i've got a black shrug or could buy a little cardie to wear over the top. am thinking of a kind of 50s look to suit my shape. unfortunately, I'm a 14 on the bottom and a 16 on the top.
I'm having trouble as everything seems to be either strapless or has the seam just under the bust.

i tried this on yesterday

and like the look of this

Something like this?

Have a look around the dresses in debs - there's usually quite a lot in the style you're describing.

Congrats on the brilliant loss also!

Congratulations . H & M have a prom dress very similar to the John Rocha one (black, grey and white, classic 50's print and with straps) for just £25. Its extremely good quality and would be perfect for a wedding. I have bought it myself (not going to a wedding - just have a love for 50's fashion).

thanks, ladies.

shall have a nose round debenhams and h&m. unfortunately can't wear halter necks as am too large in norkage to find a halter necked bra, it's thick shoulder straps for me, i'm afraid

ah well then the H & M dress would be perfect as it is more this shape on the top (doesn't actually look like this dress - was the first one I found with same type of top!!). So thick shoulder straps wouldn't be an issue.

I can't find a direct link to the dress for you because it isn't on the UK site but if you go here click on page number 3 (page numbers are listed directly below the row of photos) and then click on the dress which has peachy roses on it. The dress I am thinking of has the same black/grey/white option available but the top is a different design like the Coast one above.

Just thought it might help you to know what you are looking for!! BTW, "jurk" is dutch for dress......in case you were wondering!!

PollyGarter · 16/02/2009 12:11

Ooh, i like that too...! Wonder if it would suit me?

soopermum1 · 17/02/2009 17:23

well, had a nose in debenhams today and just about eerything was strapless, who are these women that wear all this strapless stuff?

tried this on, and it was ok, except the ribon ting came in under the bust not on the waist, another bug bear of mine, do women not have waists any more?

Couldn't see your link.

Shame about debs. If h and m is sold out, then monsoon is worth a look also - quite a few online

I see what you mean about the waists... quite odd.

soopermum1 · 21/02/2009 19:38

well, thought I'd copme back on and tel you the happy ending. I ddin't end up getting a prom dress. I got these, but still going with the 50s curvy look that seems to suit my shape. am wearing my trusty spank underneath of course

thanks for all your help, will still have a look at that h&m prom dress
