What to wear to my best friend's wedding?

cupofteaplease · 15/02/2009 08:39

It is in May. My dds are the flower girls.

About me: I am a size 12 bottom, size 14 on top due to my flabby tummy. I don't have a waist, and am quite large above my hips, whereas my hips are non existant (if you can imagine that). Consequently I can never find a dress to suit my barrel shape. I hate hate hate my flabby arms, but am proud of my slim legs.

The colour scheme is hot pink, so that colour is out. Any other colour would be fine. The bridesmaids are wearing dresses that cross over the bust, with a wide sash, then a floaty skirt that finishes just below the knee. So obviously, that style will be avoidable if possible...

So, what type of dress to wear? Where from?

Please, any ideas are welcome as I am very unsure of where to start.

What about something fairly close on the top half that then falls into floaty frilly layers for a skirt - showing off a bit of leg. If it's May you won't want long sleeves but could go with a nice wrap to cover arms?

cupofteaplease · 15/02/2009 08:59

would this be okay? or is it never acceptable to wear cream/white? Bride's dress is called diamond or dark white, so not ivory...

I think patterned cream is fine and that's absolutely beautiful!

You could get a lovely wrap to cover your arms if you're not comfy showing them.

cupofteaplease · 15/02/2009 09:23

Thanks Flight, think I might put a bid on. Typical man, my dh said- crikey 50 quid for a dress, that's a bit steep

Lol
Could you maybe email your friend and clear it with her first, if you're worried?

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 15/02/2009 14:51

Hope you got the dress cupofteaplease. It is beautiful but I see that the auction has ended on it now.

FWIW, if you did happen to get it, I think its perfect for a wedding and the pattern stops it from looking like someone trying to upstage the bride

cupofteaplease · 15/02/2009 17:22

Grr- didn't win the dress Rather annoyed because it is lovely! I shall keep my eyes peeled in case one like it comes up agian...

If bottom half is slim how about fitted trousers
and a bat wing top to diguise the wobbly tum?

cupofteaplease · 15/02/2009 17:41

Could do, LMLT, but I think I may feel too casual in trousers?

OP posts:
LoveMyLapTop · 15/02/2009 17:46

a really smart trouser suit?
I know what you mean though a dress is far more conventional

PollyGarter · 15/02/2009 18:07

How about this? It will show off your pins nicely.

Ronaldinhio · 15/02/2009 18:25

Is the wedding in the UK?
Are they trad types or fashionistas?

Describe your favourite outfit at the shape you are now...to give me ideas...

cupofteaplease · 15/02/2009 19:14

Ooh, I love the Monsoon dress, but not in black sorry, I'm being very fussy.

Ronaldinhio- wedding is a UK church, followed by hotel.
They are both 27 (same as me), and to give you an idea of the bride- she goes to many wedding each year and she always wears a dress, and says it has to be patterned, so you don't risk looking like one of the bridesmaids Luckily I know the style and colour of the bridesmaid dress so I can avoid this, but I suppose I should look for a patterned dress if possible.

I feel most comfortable in boot cut trousers or jeans (so LMLT has a point with the smart trousers/suit), as I have slim thighs, and a top that can either be tucked in and baggy-ed out over the waist band to hide my tum, or a top that gathers at the bottom. I wear lots of sparkly scarves and chunky bracelets. I always wear sleeves, especially 3/4 length sleeves but I appreciate this may not be possible with a dress, so I'd have to wear a cardi.

HTH!!

this top

Ronaldinhio · 15/02/2009 19:37

love this!
what do you think?

Ewe · 15/02/2009 19:43

This DvF could glam up nicely?

Ewe · 15/02/2009 19:45

Ohhh or this!

PollyGarter · 15/02/2009 20:10

i love that red wrap dress, ewe

the colouring/style of this aqua dress is love/hate, but it could be very flattering with the right wrap.

or thiswrap blouse with troos or skirt to show off your legs.

cupofteaplease · 15/02/2009 20:26

Okay- LOVE the red dress, but may be a little warm if it's a hot day. ALSO, my dds are wearing dresses with hot pink so may clash a litte (but I'm being picky now!)

Absolutely love the second dress you found R from M&S- actually think that could be the one! I love the loose sleeves, and it is short enough to make the most of my only good best feature, my legs.

Polly- like the colour of the aqua dress and would love it, but I think the dress would accentuate my tum and make me look like a sack of potatoes!

Thanks so much for looking. If you do see anything else, or accessories for the M&S dress...
