I really want some new clothes but we don't have a pot to piss in at the moment.

Buying clothes is right at the bottom of the money list just now (oh and for the forseeable future)Everything I have seems worn tired and a bit shit. I haven't had anything new for about a year (apart from a posh dress I bought at xmas, that was only £20). Please give me some ideas.

clothes swap party with friends

Miyazaki · 14/02/2009 18:18

Have a swap party with your friends?

Get the dye out, I quite often dye all my black clothes back to black. Makes them look new-ish.

Go to charity shops in posh areas. Ebay?

Sparkletastic · 14/02/2009 18:19

Matalan, Ebay, customise what you have, hold a clothes swap party with some mates (you must have some okay-ish stuff - pre-baby stuff maybe?!), learn to sew (says she who doesn't know owt about sewing ).

get some cheap plain t shirts (long sleeves) from Primark if you don't mind shopping there.

DD2 suggests Tesco too for simple separates.

alicecrail · 14/02/2009 18:22

Can you sew at all? If you find something nice in charity shops that isn't your size or quite your taste then you could alter it. Another good option is to find some bright chunky jewellery, as even if you wear the same plain dress/sweater/suit everyday some really bold accessories are going to be what people look at.

MABS · 14/02/2009 19:15

where are you lilliput?

LaTrucha · 14/02/2009 19:31

Don't buy anything you don't really like just because it's cheap. You'll just feel even more dispirited every time you put it on - if you even do put it on.

Lilliput · 14/02/2009 22:13

You are right about buying the cheap stuff, I need to think about 'price per wear' and sometimes I may buy myself a top for £10 and hardly wear it because it feels cheap and I know it is cheap. I have unfortunately sent quite a bit to the charity shop over the last couple of years so I have virtually nothing to swap. I think I need to try to get to the Edinburgh charity shops.

Go to the charity shops in expensive places. I used to go to ones in Hampstead and it was incredible the things that people had given away.
