Help with interview outfit please

I'm applying for jobs at the moment and I need suitable clothes for any interviews I may get.
I'm 5'2, size 6-8, small of nork and more comfortable in trousers than skirts or dresses. I prefer more casual suff as I just feel like I'm playing dress up otherwise.
I've requested an application for Clerical Assisstant in a Primary School so clothes to suit that would be great.

I have around £100 to spend if needs be but I'm looking to spend as little as possible.

Advice on accessories would be great too. I have no idea about fashion, I wear what I like and what I can find in charity shops really.

Trousers and a smart top (with coat if cold) never go wrong..

Next have a very good petite section

muggglewump · 13/02/2009 16:51

Yes, I like Next clothes, or at least liked, I've not been in there for years. I read on here that they are bad though?
I need to know what shoes and things to wear.

I just don't want to lose a job because the person after me has a better outfit

Oh and I have a coat. It's waist length, belted and grey. I did buy it in the kids section of M&Co though so does that mean it's a no go?

Oh god, I need more than help

I had no real idea either. I had an interview which led to a job offer a couple of weeks ago though, so will tell you what I wore. I put absolutely no thought or effort in (well I did brush my hair and apply extra concealer just to be polite) but somehow it must have been OK...

Cream blouse
Bright pink Hobbs tweed shift dress (worn over bouse as pinafore)
Navy cropped twill jacket
Nude tights
Black mary janes
Black Osprey handbag
Long black overcoat and black suede gloves as was tres icy that day.

Good luck

MrsSeanBean · 13/02/2009 16:56

Oh and a navy shell disc necklace in a last minute attempt to tie together an ill-advised mish mash of black pink and navy.

mileniwmffalcon · 13/02/2009 17:01

i'd go trousers and shirt, heeled boots. not sure about dressing petite - would wide trousers swamp you? h&m do a great range of work type shirts - 3/4 sleeves, fitted, with stretch. personally i'd go grey trousers (since you have grey coat) red shirt - or similar bright colour, purple or electric blue - so you don't blend into the background too much.

i miss having an excuse to dress smart for work [sahmface]

muggglewump · 13/02/2009 17:49

But what shirt, and which trousers?
I look ridiculous in wide trousers as I have size 2-3 feet.
I really need a guided walkthrough of clothes.
Why can't I just wear my Dalmation print pink PJ's from Primark and fake Uggs from Peacocoks?

MrsSeanBean
I don't know what twill is
Ditto Osprey.
Overcoat?
I don't know what that is either and the only shell necklaces I know are ones you buy on the beach on holiday.
Suede gloves? I have a purple pair of acrylic gloves that DD has pinched.

Could anyone please provide links to clothes I should wear?
I really don't know.

Muggle, I don't know what your budget it, but if you like trousers, maybe something like this? (just an example..)

mileniwmffalcon · 13/02/2009 18:42

okay, i can see you're limited looking for something in such small sizes. what do you think to these trousers (not too wide cut, can wear stuff tucked in to show waist detail or not as you prefer) with this top? (the one at the back) it's smart but not oversmart, if that would make you uncomfortable. and you'll still be able to wear it for work once you get the job too (rather than investing in a suit that's really too smart for work wear)

mileniwmffalcon · 13/02/2009 19:01

dotty p's have a decent petites selection, and cheap, unfortunately a lot of stuff is sold out in your size online (e.g. these trousers) but worth going into a shop if you have one nearby. this shirt isn't petite but it's the kind of thing i'd be looking for, ideally with elbow length rather than short sleeves.

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 13/02/2009 19:03

Hi Muggle. I think Mrs SB's suggestion from Hobbs is a perfect interview outfit. I know its outside of your budget but you could use that as a guide for other stores. The bright colour of the top will get you noticed but the suit tames it so it says "bright and sparky" rather than "wild and whacky" (which, imo, is never a good look for interviews unless you are a clown....... ).

muggglewump · 13/02/2009 21:19

Yes, *MrsSeanBean, good fitting black trousers are what I'm looking for. I'd like a pair with a nice top to go with them.

I love those trousers mileniwmffalcon, they are very me, and I can see they would make the most of my figure although I don't buy online, as my "think they would look great", inevitably ends up being, "makes you look like a ridiculous, fat, gremlin"
Do you mean the halter neck top in the background? I like it, but I'm not sure it's appropriate, unless there's a way to wear it that I don't know about (quite possible) and the blouse witrh patterns on really is not me at all.

Thanks for the help so far though, I do appreciate it.

Sorry didn't read op properly muggle, I missed the budget. Here are some other useful black trousers from M&S
How about a [plain white T shirt and this jacket? (Both petite range and come in under budget.)

MrsSeanBean · 14/02/2009 08:58

For a more casual top, something like this?

muggglewump · 14/02/2009 14:50

Ooh yes, I like that top and the trousers. I'll most likely go in to Glasgow next Saturday and try some things on.
