somedays i don't bother to look nice don't wear make up. do much with my hair or wear nice clothes.

i only wash my hair every 2 days [should i do it everyday?] so some days it looks a right state, i put it up in a poytail, and its all knotted.
i put my glasses on as i can't be bothered to wear my contcats, wear no make up, make no effort with clothes.
or nails or brows.

i think my hairs sometimes the trampyist thing when it gets all knotted.

Well done, it's a start! For now you could get away with a good coat for the school run, it's so cold no-one knows what you are wearing underneath One of the mum's at our school has a TERRIBLE coat though, makes her look like a member of the gestapo so no full length, high necked numbers please!

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 13/02/2009 18:56

Mrs H.....is it just the usual "can't be arsed cos I am at home with kids" syndrome or are you feeling crappier than that? Sorry if this is too personal. You just sound rather down .

Glad you felt better today though . Don't feel you have pissed anyone off. IME, tis the nature of MN that you cannot possibly please all the people all of the time

fishie · 13/02/2009 19:01

gaspod can you look at length when you are in there? i am nowhere near. i really like the cotton crochet thingy but must be as a dress, i have a very similar tunic.

mrs h once i had decided that there was no way it was possible to go out of the house without makeup etc it got a lot easier - didn't feel so embarrassing and attention seeking. i also have quite a lot of scarves, they help to perk things up too.

mrshamiltiongiles · 13/02/2009 19:04

well if you know of any coats let me know, i have no idea what i'm doing!

trmjs no i don't think it's any deeper than i'm just being lazy, well i don't think so anyway.

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 13/02/2009 19:14

well I totally relate to the lazy thing. On the days that I don't put make up on, bother with my clothes etc, I always catch sight of myself whilst I am out and about and think "WTF???"!!!!!

Agree with Fishie.....doesn't have to be statement make up - just make it part of your routine that you use tinted moisturiser, mascara, blusher and nude lipstick at the very least each day. I also find that having gotten used to wearing make up I look after my skin better generally so its in much better condition now. Brush your hair (several times a day if its prone to knottiness) and spritz yourself with perfume. Oh and make sure your shoes are in good repair and polished.

Other tip from me would be that it is okay to slob out in jeans and t-shirts BUT make sure your basics are nice ones. Throw out anything that has faded/shrunk or stained - no matter how much you love it. Again, they don't have to be expensive - Tesco have some nice slubby cotton ones with fluted short sleeves in their F & F range for £8 which are just a bit dressier than a standard top. Will look great either by themselves or layered over a long-sleeved top. H & M, Top Shop and Miss Selfridge are also good for this - look for slinkier fabrics rather than thick cotton ones.

Oh and a necklace, bangle or nice earrings (or even all three ) can make the world of difference to even the most average of outfits.

GaspodTheWonderDog · 13/02/2009 19:16

What colour is your hair/skin? What norkage are you (big, flat or middle?)

Fishie - Mistral do you mean? I won't be in one for AGES unfortnately as there isn't one near me, I just always go when I'm visiting a friend who had one near her (she lives about 3 hrs from me )

GaspodTheWonderDog · 13/02/2009 19:19

Coloured eyeliner good too (nothing garish) just a subtle line under the eye if you are prone to ending up with mascara everywhere if you use it on bottom lashes. I personally don't use anything on my skin (apart from basic moisturiser) as I'm lucky to have good skin, I wouldn't start with foundation etc unless you need it, it's a lot of faff.

mrshamiltiongiles · 13/02/2009 19:22

med skin dark brown hair 32d

if i could just get 1 or 2 nice outfits that might set me off in the right direction.

m and s

this colour is fab

nice cord jacket for when it's a bit warmer - other colours are a bit ridiculous

white shirt and coloured tank top for classic layering

GaspodTheWonderDog · 13/02/2009 21:47

Also decent pair of jeans and also for spring a pair of converse trainers

GaspodTheWonderDog · 13/02/2009 21:48

Also, be careful not to overuse the word also

lilQuidditchKel · 13/02/2009 23:57

MrsH you sound like a very nice person. I would love to help you by taking your money and spending it for you . Budget is my main problem; not laziness. We could be a good match

Right, seriously, have you tried a personal shopper? They might help you get started.

I often see an outfit I like in a shop window and just go in and buy the whole thing complete. It's normally displayed with accessories so you don't need to think too much about what to choose.

Golden rule of shopping for me is, always buy an outfit, not just one piece. Otherwise you end up with a wardrobe full of tops which don't go with bottoms etc.

2nd golden rule of shopping is stick to a few colours. Strictly. That way most of your clothes will coordinate with each other.

HTH!

YAY! Great coat! Were you talking about fat face with the tank top, am confused... couldn't see anything like that..

pavlovthecat · 15/02/2009 15:55

Several pairs of really good jeans, whatever your figure you can get them to flatter you/cover bits whatever you need them to do.

Strappy tops - a ton, in different colours. I have a few nice ones by Red Herring Debenhams, little lace, fit well, like £8 or something each,

Several nice cardigans to wear over strappy top - one black, one another colour.

Nice pair of knee high boots, nice pair of shoes.

Almost Make-up by clinique - this is fab, its basically tinted moisturiser, so if you do not have time to put loads on, this freshens your face

Mascara - normal everyday wear/senstive one, wont hurt your eyes too much, esp wth contacts.

Lip gloss - slightly tinted/clear.

Short nails / clear nail varnish.

Couple of nice peices of costume jewelry to wear (beads, crystals, that kind of thing), same with rings, couple nice bands, alternate to add some glam.

Brush your hair - use a good conditioner if you get knotted hair. Leave it on for 30 mins once a week.

Carry brush, foundation/tinted moisturise, lip gloss and hairbrush in bag, quick once over when you are in loos, just about to get out of car.

This will give you a base, then you can buy/add things as you see them, have time to dress up more.

GaspodTheWonderDog · 15/02/2009 16:30

yy totally with pavlov on the strap tops

desertgirl · 15/02/2009 16:57

mrs h, was it the white stuff link from an earlier post that you meant? if so I think the pale blue tank top and tshirt are at tshirt and tank
