laser eye surgery - anyone done it/recommend it?

I really hate wearing glasses and am thinking about laser eye surgery - has anyone had it done, would you recommend it? Was told by friend of friend that you could get it done for as little as £250 per eye - not sure that going as cheap as chips is necessarily best when it comes to something as precious as your eyes though. Does anyone know of a reputable company that isn't too expensive?

my life was transformed by contact lenses, have you tried them?

BonsoirAnna · 09/02/2009 20:13

Yes, I had laser surgery 6 years ago. I wore contact lenses for a very long time before that. But it cost me 2,000 euros or so (very good, reputable surgeon).

My mum is an optometrist any she definately would not recommend going to a day clinic type set up , she would only refer to surgeons in a hospital. Sometimes things go wrong, and it that case you'll get the best possible aftercare. Sorry I can't recommend anyone as I'm not in the UK, but for my eyes I think I'd pay a premium, rather than go for the cheapest option, as tempting as that might be.

Frangipani, if you do a search on "laser eye surgery" there are LOADS of threads on this under the Health topic.

One of the clinics I used to work in did LASIK (forget the right spelling but lasik and lasek - are very very different) and for staff it was 500 insted of 2500 and you would be photographed in all the promotional literature as the 'real life people'.

Sadly my rx was way out of the parameters but if I could have it done I would. I only saw patients chuffed to pieces with it, the worst thing being you can't wear mascara for about a month! A lot of places do interest free so cost doesn't have to be that bad??

I had mine done 9 years ago, best 500 quid ever spent.
if you can afford the painless one then have that one, it was very new into the country when I did mine and recovery is quite painful if you have the cheaper option.

It was quite specialist back then, I would be very careful who I chose now if I were to to it today. hth

I had it done 8 months ago and it has changed my life. No more spare glasses/sunglasses/prescription sunglasses/solution etc.. packed in bag on holiday. Really is great.

I have to say I was really nervous..saved up the money and went to Moorfields Eye Hospital. It is not cheap but I did not want to take any risks. I would not go with a cheap day clinic.

sunnylabsmum · 11/02/2009 05:38

yes had it done about 3.5 years ago and actually bought it via ebay and saved myself about £300. I think it actually cost me about £1k but prices might have gone down. I had the epi lasek treatment, so a bit longer recovery but as they lasered the surface of the eye and didn't cut it I am less worried about a hit to the eye causing major problems. Have to admit that its one of the best things I have ever done as the freedom from glasses and contact lenses is brill. About a year before my treatment I had a serious eye infection because of wearing contact lenses and realised that I had to either wear glasser more or get something done about it

scienceteacher · 11/02/2009 06:22

I've had it done. Fab.

I had it done at a day clinic about 9 years ago. It was amazing - quick recovery, perfect vision. I would definitely recommend it.
