Boys' hairstyles. A plea for help.

I took my ds (19mo) for a haircut the other day. He had has beautiful blonde wavy hair and I tried to explain that I wanted it left quite long in a sort of 'pageboy' style. But it's too short for my liking and all layered. I wanted the top layers (if layered at all) left much longer. I like that look on small boys where the hair is quite long but just sort of nipped in around the nape of the neck, with a long swishy top layer that swings around when they move their head. A bit like the classic old-fasioned pudding basin look I suppose, but more stylishly created. I also like the much longer 'surfer boy' look, and this was how it had grown naturally, but when I trimmed his fringe -as I thought, to avoid a hairdresser - Dh and others complained that it looked like a mullet.

If, by a long shot, there is anyone out there who has the faintest idea what I am on about, please can you post some pictures so that I have something to show the hairdresser in future?

YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!

I have this exact problem. that's the style i want for DS but they always cut all his beautiful hair off! (after it's taken FOREVER to grow!!)

i've actually considered drawing it so they will GET it!!

MrsSeanBean · 02/02/2009 13:09

So annoying isn't it PMDW?

Hopefully some MNers who have this style for their DS will be able to post some pics for us.

Otherwise we will actually have to resort to the pudding basin...

You can do this one yourself, get a better result and save a fortune. Invest in a set of clippers, and do the back on a no. 3 or no. 4 setting. I use the clippers to take the weight out of the longer hair on top, cos ds has really thick hair. Otherwise cut it with scissors. Worth getting a pair of thinning scissors too. Really, it's not that hard. I taught myself after one too many experiences of asking the barber for a pageboy cut, and ds still coming out with a really brutal 1950s short back and sides.

I don't post pics of my dc on t'interweb, but if you really want a photo, CAT me and I'll email you one.

I have a similar problem and as a result dread taking DS to the hairdressers -they just don't get it! It seems that they do 2 styles:

  1. Shaved on a no.1 or 2 all over
  2. Short back and sides

DS doesn't suit short hair at all.

I'll be watching with interest.

Fatface catalogue?

purplemonkeydishwasher · 02/02/2009 15:52

you'd think that if there were this many of us who want the same style that it would be more known to hairdressers!

KarlWrenbury · 02/02/2009 15:54

You have to get it quite long for this. Try a mobile female hair dresser imo and rip a pic out of the next dirctory .

KarlWrenbury · 02/02/2009 15:55

and you have to have the top layers long

Buy Milk Magazine (French children's fashion mag) or look at their website - they have lots of cutely coiffed children.

MrsSeanBean · 02/02/2009 16:19

Hummm. Am googling boys' hairstyles.

I have found a picture of someone's child online, but it's not 100% what I mean really, due to an awkward angle.

i have just come home from taking me just turned 4 yr old son to the hairdressers, i usually do it myself. i was quite clear that i wanted just a little off the length all over and i wanted the top nice and long with just a hint of layering- it looks AWFUL now i want to cry its all choppy and layered and messy...not fair.

hoarsewhisperer · 16/03/2009 16:14

my dh took our eldest to the hairdresser once....it was awful and it cost 25 euro. after that i took him to my hairdresser, explained carefully how i wanted it to look - he showed me how to do it (is a lovely man) and since then i have been doing it myself, and saved a small fortune as well.

ABetaDad · 16/03/2009 16:16

You are all very brave taking boys to hairdressers.

We just clipper them both at a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the stress.

ChopsTheDuck · 16/03/2009 16:23

omg, that's def me put off hairdressers! One of mien does have a puydding bowl, the other has what you describe. It's due for a cut and I was tempted to take him to the hairdressers to save me the hassle of doing it and since I'm not a hairdresser. Not now!
There is a pic of ds1 in my profile which was taken pretty soon after it was last cut. It's longer at the back and very long layers all the way round sot hat it is jsut feathery at the bottom, but keeps the thickness on top. I think if the layers are too short it can look girly.
