Can I home dye my highlighted hair?

Been gradually going back blonde from brown, been going to hairdressers every so often to get more and more highlights.

However, money is very tight - no way I can afford the prices and have a home dye kit sat waiting to be used. Was gonna use it last time and my hairdresser said NO NO NO! I have red tones in my natural colour but I don't remember the last time my hair was asu naturel (but I realise the roots will be)

So, the question is do I put up with my ridiculous dark roots or put this all over blonde on myself??

Is it likely to go green/orange?

NO NO NO! Save for a trip to the hairs dressers and in the meantime a zig zag parting will hide the roots. As would curls if you are having a night out.

If you do a full head colour - you will end up with more regrowth in a matter of a few weeks (3-4) and it will look much worse. Then you will have to buy more and more home dye and this will be put on by you at home and not just on the roots.

if you are short of money - try the local college for training hairdressers that will be very well supervised and do the highlights at discount price.

Can you use the kit in a highlight fashion just over your roots only? (If you are desperate.) If you aren't desperate and can wait, I would strongly recommend not dabbling with it yourself! [have been there done that emoticon]

Maybe you could phone around to see if there are any salon 'model nights' on where you can get a freebie/ cheap professional job instead?

melancholymum · 30/01/2009 15:10

WHy is it a NO No NO though? Is it because it will go a dodgy colour/

Tried the model thing - live in a fairly quiet village and there is little opportunity for that here. Could travel to town but it will be a bus trip with a 3 year old in tow which I don't fancy, hence anothere reason for not wanting to go to hairdressers.

Yes it will go a dodgy two tone colour because it will lighten your highlights too so your roots will still be darker.

If you are determined to go lighter you will need to go to the hairdressers.

Modelling for trainees is a good sugestion.

Also tis v difficult to bleach/lighten hair with red tones in, even hairdressers have trouble with mine.

melancholymum · 30/01/2009 15:15

Oh don't like the sound of dodgy two-tone. Might look like I have at least made the efoort though [bulsh]

MM, home colour (blone anyway IME) is always dodgy.

MrsSeanBean · 30/01/2009 15:29

blonde I meant, my typing dodgy also

roomforthree · 30/01/2009 15:50

Don't do it! Have just done mine, and I have gold roots and orange ends - not a good look!! And my hair is like straw , so will be having a jaw-length bob to get rid of the dry ends.

AlistairSim · 30/01/2009 15:53

Can you look around for someone who will come to your house and do your hair? I think they are usually cheaper and obviously you don't have to worry about a bus journey/entertaining a 3 year old in a salon.

MrsSeanBean · 30/01/2009 16:09

Wherabouts are you OP? I'd be willing to babysit if local as I know how dire bad hair days are, and the desperation that goes with them

GentleOtter · 30/01/2009 16:13

WARNING - please do not do as I have done this morning as you too may look like Uncle Gomez

melancholymum · 30/01/2009 17:54

LOL - I was seriously close to doing it this morning - so glad I came on here first! Thanks for the babysitting offer, if I'm honest it's more the money. Will just put it on hold for now. What's so bad about roots when you don't go out anyway?!

Anyway, off to the vet with the dog, an expense that can't be overlooked I guess

Pop a hat on when you go out - it's what I do
