What's the best value cashmere in your opinion?

Note that I'm asking for the best value not the cheapest! In other words, I don't mind paying a lot more if it's good quality. What I object to is paying a lot only to find that it it is too thin or looks bobbly within a fortnight! I'm bombarded with brochures from a certain company and when I've bought one or two items in the past, I haven't found the quality to be outstanding. Any recommendations?

brora. two cardigans. two pullovers. worn constantly. cardigans even borrowed by 16yr old son (they are big baggy ones to dispel image of twinset type kind). machine washed on delicate loads of times, dried flat. not a hint of bobbles, shrinking, etc etc. gap and uniqlo looked rubbish fairly soon - oh and cardigan bought from lands end once - so bobbly it's unwearable. obviously brora cost more but they have really paid for their keep, especially this winter. I think their sale is still on

agree with faustina. I have bought some cheap cashmere in the past which has not lasted at all yet I have one of my mother's cardigans which is 30 yrs old .

So how do you make sure the moths don't get 'em?

The only jumpers the moths attack in my house, are cashmere ones

I've always had a lot of success with M&S cashmere - not the cheapest but not expensive either.

RamblingRosa · 27/01/2009 09:00

I've always got on well with M&S cashmere. I've actually got a Tesco cashmere cardi that's worn really well.

I read an article a while ago about the evils of cheap cashmere (ethically, not just because they go bobbly). I can't remember where the article was or what the evils were (I think it was to do with intensive farming and poor farmers in the third world getting ripped off) but it's slightly put me off really cheap cashmere.

I'd love to have Brora but can't afford it. DD had a gorgeous Brora hat (until she chucked it out of her buggy ) and that wore really well.

my uniqlo cashmere is in great nick, not bobbly at all. and i regularly wash it in the machine (30 degree wool wash). the kids have brora blankets which are fabulous.

I have bought 2 cashmere jumpers in the Boden sale (they are still on sale at £35 and £49.50). I have only worn them for the past month (over thermals) and I'm lovely and snuggly.

I think they're great quality for the price.

I have quite a few vintage jumpers I've bought on ebay and the quality of the Scottish cashmere (Hawick, Pringle) is way above chain store and supermarket cashmere. I paid between £8 and £35 ( for an unused 60's printed pringle jumper) for these and the value is excellent - I've also got a very big pringle sweater I got in TX Maxx for £60 instead of £240 - really thick 6 ply. Brora is just about the best of the new stuff, and I've got a Brora V neck I got for £20 on ebay, which is lovely. My 2 M&S rollnecks are also very good, but not quite as good. Tesco is not very soft and a bit thin, but I do have one tunic shape jumper which I bought to match a Boden skirt ( very funny colour, couldn't find anything else that would go with it) and it has been quite serviceable, just not very special. Suggest save up for something in the next Brora sale?

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 27/01/2009 10:13

I have cashmere from Tesco which has washed beautifully and is still soft and bobble-free despite being 3 years old. However, DH treated me to a classic black polo neck from Jaegar which has shrunk and thickened despite being washed according to the instructions .

I dream about a whole cashmere collection - all folded and grouped according to colour - from white through pastels and into darker shades..........man, I need a life!!

RamblingRosa · 27/01/2009 11:18

Oh yes, Higgle is right, TK Maxx do some great cashmere all for under £40 usually. I've got some vintage cashmere too and I agree that the old Pringle jumpers last really well and they're very thick and warm.
I too dream of a cashmere wardrobe I was horrified to find that the moths had got to a few of my favourite items last winter

webchick · 27/01/2009 13:06

My Brora jumpers have gone bobbly I'm afraid 1 v-neck and 2 tank tops bought 3 years ago in sale. Havent bought any Brora stuf recently, perhaps their quality has improved.
