Things that make your hair curl...

I don't mean Marmite, eating all my crusts or Guinness!

I have thick hair, coloured these days, fairly wavy and wayward. Layered bob length.

With effort it can be straightened but I want my life back.

If left to dry naturally it goes curly but the curls don't really last and need some product to boost them. And it looks a bit messy for trying to project a professional image.

Anything in between (eg careless blow drying) results in a terrifying haystack effect.

There must be some lovely product that I could scrunch into my hair so it would stay in soft natural controlled looking curls and ideally survive to a second day.
Is that wishful thinking? Or any ideas?

have you tried hair mousse? one for curls?

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 26/01/2009 20:51

How about this?

blithedance · 26/01/2009 20:52

Yes - it goes weirdly crunchy and solid so it can't be combed (even afro comb). Is that just the price one pays?

My friend had wild hair until she discovered Frizz ease- it's been nothing short of miraculous for her and is always one of her desert island picks on those stupid surveys. I have straight hair, but when I do curl it I fnd Tresemme curl activator spray holds them really well

Mrs JS, the Frizz Ease looks nice. The mousse I have tried is Redken so should be half decent. I will give it another try!

How about a root perm, it may sound drastic but it might be just enough to tame your hair and give a bit of shape. Perms aren't as naff as they used to be.

I like Bed Head's Ego Boost to keep the curls in and give a really good shine, but I normally use Paul Mitchel 'Super Sculpt' - although this is quite heavy (I have to de-volume my hair)

HelenMc1 · 27/01/2009 16:13

My hair sounds exactly like yours and I must have tried everything! Could never get on with mousse as it either went crispy or did not provide enough definition.

The best thing I have found is either Curl Conscious creme from Bumble & Bumble (but it is expensive) or the Tony & Guy Model.Me Helena cream from Boots.

I always apply them after a generous squirt of frizz-ease serum on soaking hair.

I have bought the mousse that was recommended and am going to try that for a while, but I will note those other products too, thanks!

My hair is quite like this (except it doesn't straighten well)

I use the Aussie shampoo & conditioner for normal hair then I let it dry up in one of those (old fashioned) banana combs

When I let it down it is all smooth/shiney with a nice sort of bounce at the bottom & I don't need to use any products on it
