What shall I wear to DH's 40th?

This Saturday and I have a completely manic week and really can't go running round the shops (yes I realise I should have thought about this before!) I was going to wear something from my wardrobe - not sure what but I could cobble something together - but I was in town today and bobbed into Coast, where I tried on these two dresses:
dress 1- nice! Very dressy and a bit too low in front- but I could put a camisole underneath. Not sure I want black as ideally it would do for a summer wedding as well and what would I wear on my feet?
dress 2 - slightly too long (though I see on the website it is supposed to be below the knee) but feels absolutely lovely. Maybe a bit mumsy?
The trouble is I don't really know what I am looking for. It's a ceilidh and although I haven't imposed a dress code of any sort, some men are wearing kilts (so I can go dressy) while others will no doubt be in (smartish) jeans (so I don't have to).
I guess I want to look...not mumsy, not old enough to have a 40-year-old husband! But not madly try-too-hard trendy either. Arghhhhh.

I love the first dress and it would be great with red shoes.

I don't think the second is mumsy, if you feel good in it, go for it. You could always have the hem taken up slightly.
Enjoy the party!

Number one definitely - much sexier.

Also think you could get away with that for a wedding.

I do think number two is a little frumpier.

pavlovthecat · 26/01/2009 13:06

I do not like no.2.

I love no.1 I agree with red, red shoes and a chunky red necklace (depends though, if you have dark hair, that would look fab, if your hair is blonde, not sure red would go? ).

boogeek · 26/01/2009 13:17

OK...so find me some lovely red shoes??!

these are nice, simple and very red!

pavlovthecat · 26/01/2009 13:43

these are quite nice too

ladycornyofsilke · 26/01/2009 13:49

Amazon UK have some gorgeous Carvella black or fuschia shoes for £18.99 Reduced from about £80. Either would be perfect with dress 1.

ladycornyofsilke · 26/01/2009 13:52

They're called Carvella Women's Delicious. Very nice.

ICUP · 26/01/2009 13:56

dont like number two
number one is a bit blargh too but better

how old are you?

boogeek · 26/01/2009 13:58

All of these shoes are absolutely lovely and would be perfect with dress 1 for a wedding. The carvella ones might have to be bought and stashed just because they are gorgeous and a bargain!
However, we are having a ceilidh on Saturday and if I wear any of them I will break my ankle. I can't wear flatties with that dress, it would look horrible (I don't like my legs in flats anyway) - but some sort of happy medium?

SuzeMcG · 26/01/2009 17:37

These aren't overly high.

boogeek · 26/01/2009 17:41

ICUP: I'm 35

I'm going to play devil's advocate and say that I think that this dress would be much better for a ceilidh:

www.principles.co.uk/fcp/product/-/DRESSES-SALE/Red-Frilly-Sleeve-Dress/8226

I think that the black Coast dress is lovely, but really needs very high heels while this one has a '50s vibe and therefore would go with flats or a kitten heel.

twoluvlykids · 26/01/2009 19:26

wear the 1st dress, it's DH's birthday and he'll love you in it

if your shoes hurt you can dance barefoot (well, tightfoot)

boogeek · 26/01/2009 19:54

Oh and I nearly went in Principles, too - then decided that they wouldn't have anything. Dur .
