Can anyone recommend a full strength detangling conditioner?

I am having a bad hair year and really need some help.

As you can guess I have curly hair. At the moment I have a large section of dreadlocks from my neck right up the back of my head.

The hairdresser who cut my hair last reckoned it was because the previous hairdresser used thinning scissors (which apparenly is a no no on curls)

I;ve tried all kinds of things but I cannot get rid of the tangles. Does anyone know any decent conditioners or other tricks to help me before I go and have my head shaved in frustration?

Ta muchly

Pure jojoba oil, mixed with avacado oil. Apply loads, wrap head in clingfilm, and leave for as long as poss, then shampoo. Rub a small amount of the oil through, and then rinse - it really works wonders on my hair

The tangle teezer brush gets good reviews for curly hair too

Thanks will give it a try.

Where would I get jojoba oil? I think I;ve seen avocado oil in the supermarket.

Kerastase do one, it comes in a small orange pot.

A tip - when you've washed your hair, add serum when it's wet, so it dries soft and curly.

Aussie spray
or a hair serum - toni & guy do one

don't know if it will help, but I detangle dd's thick curly hair with Johnsons detangling conditioner or Aussie 3 minute miracle and a curved detangling comb. It helps if you section and start at the ends before trying to get comb through from the scalp.

curlygal · 20/01/2009 23:07

Hmmmmm My tangles are so bad that they break teeth from combs so I tend to use my fingers.

I've tried so many products - cheap and more expensive and not much makes any difference.

Have heard good things about Kerastase so will give it shot when I am feeling richer

I like the aussie three minute miricle.

frizz ease "miraculous recovery" is rubbish.

Hairdressor sold me some wella power mask and promised great things but not much better than cheapo stuff.

Will get some jojoba and some johnstons detangler (and a new comb!)

pure coconut oil or good olive oil is also really good - again apply to hair and then wrap your head in a towel / cling film etc and leave for as long as possible - ideally while soaking in a hot bath and then wash out. it takes a while to wash out but it will leave your hair smooth and tangle free

XGirl · 20/01/2009 23:13

ps apply really really liberally!

The johnsons is good on my dts, though they dont have curly hair.

Hi Curlygal - I'm curly too and it's long and thick with mad woman tendencies.

I'm sitting here with my hair plastered in a conditioning treatment, wrapped in a plastic bag (attractive) with a warm towel over that (I pop it in the microwave to warm it up). I like the Kerastase stuff but for deep conditioning, I find any of them do the job.

I do this for about one evening every 2 weeks and it really helps.

Bitter experience has taught me that those thinning scissors are a no-no but that sort of 'stripping' they do with scissors really helps thin it out.

I got my oils from a supplier on Ebay, and it was also a lot cheaper than buying conditioner. As an added bonus you get a lovely moisturised scalp and I add lavender, tea tree and rosemary essential oils to make it smell nice and deal with any flakiness I have going on.

You can do the oil through after shampooing every wash too. I finger through, then comb with detangling comb. I find plaiting my hair at night keeps the tangles right down too, but have very long hair

Reading this with interest as my only New Year's Resolution is to find something that works on my mad, thick, dry, curly hair. L'Oreal Kids Detangling 2-in-1 used to be fabulous. I havn't used it for about 4 years, bought some a couple of weeks ago and it is pants. Either it has changed or my hair has changed.

ojon oil from QVC is fab. Don't like anything else that ojon do but the oil is brilliant.

waitrose umi deep conditioning treatment is really good and cheap too. i only ever comb hair in shower when there is conditioner on it. boots detangling comb also good.

Instead of cling film/plastic bags, remember to steal all the thin plastic shower caps when you next stay in a hotel.
