Make up advice needed

Ok am pregnant mum of 2 under 3's and I'm tired of having bigger bags under my eyes than when we've been shopping

I have never worn make up as I know a lot of people who have to scrape it off and think natural is generally nicer but now I am more than ready to be proved wrong!

What basics do I need and where is good quality and cheap???

The No 7 range is quite good, although depends on skin tone. I have the lightest one (Cream) and although am quite fair, one of my friends is very very light (think blonde eyelashes) and wears the same, it can look a bit, um, wrong...

It does look quite natural, and in fact, a colleague did ask me if I was sleeping better

Get a light foundation or maybe just powder to start off with, a good concealer, some brown/grey eye-liner and waterproof mascara.

You cant beat YSL Touche Eclat for bags under the eyes. Its my one make up thing I couldnt live without, have even taken to wearing no make up in public with just this on and some lip balm
YSL Mascara also great, but for a cheaper alternative No.7 one is good.
There is no cheap alternative to the Touche Eclat you cant beat it, and even though its £22 it lasts for ages

I found Touche Eclat to be a complete waste of money. Didn't do a thing. For me, a good foundation, which doesn't have to be expensive- I use a Max Factor one. Then use something to highlight, right now I have No7 skin illuminator which is really nice and gives your skin a nice healthy dewy glow. The best mascara I have tried is No7 360 (No7 stuff is on 3 for 2 right now as well). For general make up tips you need this lady

Another vote for Touche Eclat, two hours sleep in a stick, have tried others but none as good. I use that, a wee bit of foundation, you want one to match your skin, not change it, always test on your face not your hand. A little blusher, lip gloss and 3 shades of eyeshadow, light base, medium on the lid and dark to highlight by the lash. Takes me 5 mins but I still don't always find the time

I went make up shopping for a few cheap treats today and bought a lovely lipgloss from Rimmel called Volume Booster in Magnet. Its barely there but leaves a lovely long lasting shine to your lips - makes it perfect if you aren't used to make up.

I think foundation is worth investing in. I buy Chanel Vitalumiere. IMO, its a better bet than Touche Eclat because it does the same job but all over your face. With Touche Eclat you are then having to buy a second product for the remainder of your face. (I am a touche eclat fan btw.....just trying to prioritise for budget friendly buying!)

For my daily "eyes", I wear "Shroom" by Mac on my eye lids, with a slick of Rimmel liquid liner in absolute brown along the edge of the top lid only and a slick of Max Factor Masterpiece Mascara. I find that wearing eyeliner on the lower lid is fine when first applied but by afternoon it has usually "slipped" or smudged slightly and makes your dark circles worse. The liquid liners take some practice but stay put all day.

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 19/01/2009 22:09

BTW, its not necessary to make like Dusty Springfield/Duffy/Amy Winehouse with the liquid liner . I make a very fine line right in next to the lashes. Is not "in your face" make up but gives the eyes a lovely definition.

lou33 · 19/01/2009 22:10

ooh i bought some erase paste by benefit, and some you rebel, and i look much improved

they werent cheap but they will last ages

other wise rimmel recover liquid concealer is a good and affordable option

touche eclat makes my eyes go scaly

mosschops30 · 19/01/2009 22:19

god I wish I could do liquid liner, it just goes everywhere when I do it]

i PREFER THE BLACK BOURJOIS mascara - always looks good. I also like the tesco make up foundation - it's like a mousse in a little pot.

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 19/01/2009 22:37

mosschops - it has taken a while to get the technique right! I start in the middle of the eyelid, taking the line outwards and then go back to the original start point and take the line inwards. It means you get a nice fine line on the inner part of the eyelid, iyswim. I also lean on the shelf beneath my bathroom mirror to keep a steady hand!

Best type of liquid liners have a pen type applicator rather than a brush (the brush ones look like nail varnish brushes and spread & splay). Rimmel do both types so you will need to unscrew bottle to check.

lou33 · 19/01/2009 22:46

i prefer the brush applicator, not hte pen , i find it gives a more precise line

p1umpudding · 19/01/2009 23:11

if you're worried about the bags under your eye, then I suggest that you keep your eye gel and under eye concealer in the fridge.

Again, it's worth investing in a good foundation. This will ensure that everything stays on your face and doesn't slide off by 1pm. Chanel Vitalumiere and Elizabeth Arden (forget the name, thinks it's Stay Fresh). Apply foundation to the tips of your fingers and apply from the nose outwards. Using your fingers means that the product gets to body temp and gives you an even finish. Set with a dusting of translucent powder.

If you're not used to makeup, then you may prefer a brown eyeliner, quick lash of black mascara (must be good quality or will flake off), peachy-pink blush and tinted lip gloss, applied thinly to give a hint of colour.

You should be able to buy the basics for around £40.
