ok i have no style whatsoever , but it is my hair that i am thoroughly fed up with . I am brunette with shades of grey ,it is just past shoulder length and kind of wavy . I wear it in a pony tail all the time and have been considering for some time to have it cut short . I am also overweight ,have a small head and wondered if i could get away with short hair ? is it easier than long ? can anyone recommend any styles ? dont really want a bob ,as it requires a lot of straightening on my part ,dont think i could get away with a grade one a'la gi jane /sinead o'connor ,so any ideas anyone ?

I found short hair much more hassle - you have to keep getting it cut really regularly and hoping that you get a good cut each time. You also can't hide behind your hair if it's short and are just stuck with the same style.

tengreenbottles · 19/01/2009 19:03

what more regularly than every 18months OMG!

I used to have long hair for years, but had it all chopped last year and yes I have it cut every 6 weeks but I've found a fab hairdresser and find that I am addicted to getting it cut now.

There are plenty of short styles you could get away with without having to do too much to it.

VampiresWalkin · 19/01/2009 19:15

Do NOT get it cut.

It sounds like mine. I ended up with The McClusky. My hair is still not growing fast enough (cuts were October - the first nightmare one, and then the one to make it so I could leave the house).

Shape the long hair!

VampiresWalkin · 19/01/2009 19:15

The wave means you either get flicky bits (in a bad way) or have to use straighteners every bloody day

smurfgirl · 19/01/2009 19:16

Any hairstyle is easy with GHDs!

I just has my hair cut from mid back length to shoulder length and that has made a big difference.
Its so easy to do and dries really quickly. I don't have many layers which helps, I have quite a fat face and my hairdresser said to keep it long roung my face and not have it shaped around it to avoid it looking too round.

Hope this helps?

short hair can equal matronly, frumpy and middle aged unless you have exceptional face or bone structure imo combined with an exceptional cut.

But I am probably biased as I was made to have short hair as a child and continued with it into my twenties.

Once I grew up a little (late 20s) have always had mid to long and don't think will ever have it short again.

I also hate the I look similar to DH sydrome - you sometimes see couples with same haircut, fleece and jeans.

Some people look good with short hair I am thinking Agnes Deyn, a presenter on QVC, my work colleague and Posh Spice. Also dislike the newsreader helmet.

I do like the sort of bob though that Cate Blanchett had in Indiana Jones.

That probably hasn't helped you at all. How about a long layered cut.

VampiresWalkin · 19/01/2009 19:26

GHDs are great, but you still have to plug in the bastard things and use them every day, longer hair you can leave if you want to. (Still in shock and bitter )

BBBee · 19/01/2009 19:29

do GHD dry your hair though? as in make it horribly frizzy?

VampiresWalkin · 19/01/2009 19:33

Nope, normally either blow dry (rare) or leave to dry flat (not sleep on it wet) and then GHD in the morning with some heat protection spray stuff

tengreenbottles · 19/01/2009 20:18

Right so what you are saying is basically this :
keep hair longer
get decent cut
get up half an hour earlier (so 5.30)
straighten
use products

OK how about a perm ,i know ,but my hair takes them really well, and they are so much easier than flat hair ?

Will await the response to your perm suggestion with interest. Your hair sounds like mine really, and I was actually happier with it longer and permed, but that was in the 90's.
Now it is shoulder length and needs straigthening every wash and I just cant do it.
I too want a style I don't have to straighten all the time!

tengreenbottles · 19/01/2009 20:37

yes manky our time will come again cue over the top baddie laughter !!! oh how i yearn for the days of 'the breakfast club' when you knew where you were with a good perm

sorry for appalling grammar ,half way down a bottle of wine !

OP posts:
cmotdibbler · 19/01/2009 20:43

DO NOT PERM IT

I wouldn't cut it either - imo some people with wavy hair are cut out for the straightening/blow drying every day, and some of us aren't

Have your hair coloured (and then find a Belle Colour of the same shade and use that) and find something different to do with your hair. I wear mine twisted up in a kind of french pleat which only needs an ibis clip to secure.

I have some long layers at the front so that if I can be *rsed to straighten it etc it looks nice down

tengreenbottles · 19/01/2009 20:47

i am not talking the footballer perm of the 80s ,i mean taking my wave and taming it ,i agree with the colour idea though ,my horse has better coloured hair than me at the moment !

I had my hair cut short about 3 years ago and ave been growing it out ever since. I loved the style, it was like Sadie Frost's a few years back, but it was incredibly hard work, and I really missed my hai, which I didn't expect. I have often thought I'd lie to get it cut again but am currently still too fat having put on lots of weight in pg. I think looking after your hair is important, so get any spit ends cut off. And use different products, especially if you are styling. I hate Tresemme shapooos as they made my hair sooo greasy but their styling stuff means I can get my hair very straight or nice and curly with very little effort or damage. I was asking for hair advice a few days ago and was directed to youtube, where I found this lovely lady- the products she uses are good and you can get a good effect with a curler rather than rollers. Also, speaking of style, you need Panacea81 who can show even complete dunces like me how to do amazing make up

izyboy · 19/01/2009 20:51

I used to have long hair now it is pretty short, I have quite wavy hair. My cut is very choppy with very rough raggedy layers. It washes and dries really easily and I have had compliments that it looks better like this. It also grows well too (only get to the hairdressers rarely).

Rough and ragged is the way to go.

tengreenbottles · 21/01/2009 12:43

liking the sound of rough and ragged izy and littlelamb how did you know that i have never been able to put make up on great links

OP posts:
mankyscotslass · 21/01/2009 16:07

Rough and ragged is me too
My hair is really coarse and grows out the way. It's really thick too, and always needs some serious thinning. I just think poker straight hair isn't me, but none of the hairdressers I have been to really get it when I ask for a low maintenance cut, they just wave the straightners at me.
Even with GHD's it's 45 minutes work in the mornings, when I have a 6 yrs old, 5 year old and a 3yr old to get ready. So my favourite look is now a pony tail
