What does your 11 year old dd wear and where from?

I know there have been threads like this before but I'm hoping for current links. DD2 is 11, quite tall, very skinny and really not interested in clothes at all. However she now only has about three outfits that actually fit her.

These are:

  • skinny jeans with a long stripey jumper

boot cut jeans with a long-sleeved T shirt and a knitted shrug

  • flared jeans with a zip up emo-type fleecy thing
  • Any ideas / links / shop advice greatly appreciated please.

She hates Next and Boden and will sometimes contemplate the odd item in Gap or Zara but other than that I can't think of anywhere.

Tia.

It is stocked in independent shops in the UK. I think there are some branches too...

BonsoirAnna · 19/01/2009 17:43

Yes, if you search under "boutiques" on the site you can find addresses in the UK.

Sweet skirt available online at Verbaudet.

janeite · 19/01/2009 18:30

Thanks Anna. Will have a mooch. I'd forgotten about Verbaudet - used to get lovely things for the girls when they were much younger from there.

She doesn't like that skirt either though -"too mini" again! She is rather old fashioned I guess!

Are Verbaudet and La Redoute virtually the same thing now?

What about River Island ?- thrie sizing is really small and they fo size 6 - its a real mix of styles too.

Tinker · 19/01/2009 22:58

Top Shop size 8 tops should fit.

Cammelia · 20/01/2009 09:11

Janeite, you said earlier that you liked the Ted Baker range in Debenhams for your daughter - Jack Wills Sale prices are not much more expensive than that
But if she's not into the preppy sporty look though, its not much good! They do fit tall skinny girls really well though.

janeite · 20/01/2009 17:29

Ted Baker in Debenhams in the sale was quite cheap! Jack Wills would be too big; Topshop size 8 or even size 6 still way too big. Even Gap size 0 or 2 still way too big. She still needs children's sizes but hates all the children's clothes AND all the adult clothes everywhere it seems!

I think I'm going to try and hunt out a pair of black combat style trousers and perhaps a couple of shrugs/cardigans for when she needs to be a bit smarter than jeans. I think I've failed on the skirt front, unless anybody can find some non-mini skirts!

Thanks all - sorry to be so awkward.

How about a tunic dress over leggings and a polo neck, with ballet flats? There are things like that at Vertbaudet.

Docbunches · 20/01/2009 18:22

My DD, 11, is just beginning to become interested in clothes and usually goes to places like H&M, Tammy, New Look, Punkyfish. She also doesn't mind wearing Asda and Tesco clothes, which can be really trendy. We sometimes treat her to Roxy t-shirts, but usually only sale stuff.

Personally, I think there's a gap in the market for this age group, ie, they're too old for Next, M&S, Boden; but perhaps a bit too young for Top Shop, Zara, etc.

Funnily enough, I had never heard of Jack Wills until only yesterday when DD came home from ballet saying some of the girls were wearing Wills tops. But when I looked at their website it was a bit pricey for me, even at sale prices!

janeite · 20/01/2009 18:30

There's certainly a gap in the market!

She doesn't really like the stuff in Tammy, New Look or Punky Fish tbh, although the sizes in there are okay. It's all too "fashiony" and she's really not into it. It's so difficult to find clothes for this age range - she doesn't want to folow fashion beyond her skinny jeans; she's not into the mini skirt or tunic with leggings look; she does quite like knitted jumper dresses for wearing with tights or over jeans but we haven't really found any nice ones this year.

Apologies for typos.

I agree about how difficult it is for this age range - my DD also tends to stick to the same few favourite outfits (she has two pairs of skinny jeans that just get alternated between washes). Quite often, she will come back from a shopping trip intending to buy clothes and say 'I couldn't find anything!'.

BellaDonna79 · 20/01/2009 21:52

How about Abercrombie Kids? The clothes come up very skinny and they aren't too fashiony, lots of good quality basics in tons of colours. You'd have to ship over from the states but as its in $ the prices aren't too bad.

janeite · 20/01/2009 22:08

Thanks. She needs to be able to try them on instore really, as sizing seems to vary so much. The basic T-shirts look fine but she didn't like the skirts/shorts/hoodies etc.

I am beginning to think that sack cloth may be the only answer!

GrapefruitMoon · 21/01/2009 13:22

Have you tried H&M? It can be fashiony but more "rock-chic" than girly iyswim. If she prefers really casual stuff , what about Fat Face?

I tend to get my dd stuff from all over, including supermarkets (Sainsburys can be quite good)

Fimbo · 21/01/2009 13:26

My dd is a similar age. Loves New Look (I hate it but hey ho).

Have you tried John Lewis?

Fimbo · 21/01/2009 13:29

Something like this

Fimbo · 21/01/2009 13:30

I love this but my dd would probably recoil in horror.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 21/01/2009 13:34

I got all excited when I clicked on this thread because my DD1 is also a skinny non-fashiony 11-year-old. But there really is so little out there for this age group. At the moment DD's entire wardrobe consists of two pairs of skinny jeans from H&M, a few stripey tops also from H&M and a plain red sweatshirt from New Look. And a black dress from Miss Selfridge. She seems happy enough with that. I would get more clothes for her but there is never anything she likes. That Emily Strange link is great, just her sort of thing so perhaps for her birthday....

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 21/01/2009 13:36

Fimbo, my eight year old would love those dresses, but DD1 would not! It's a curious age, neither a child nor a teen exactly.

janeite · 21/01/2009 19:56

Fimbo - thanks for the links. The first she says is "too loud" - the second is just the kind of thing she was happy to wear over leggings or with tights and boots up until last year but now she says "I'm not a little girl".

I'll have a mooch on the JL site; hadn't thought of them.
