I am running out of my Molton Brown Heavenly Gingerlily sparkly spray and usually wear Jo Malone's Nutmeg and Ginger (also love the black cafe vetyvr) - so I like woody fragrances - cedary and sandalwoody and nutmeggy-
any ideas for something else to try ?

It sounds like you've found your new scent MaryAnnSingleton.

Maybe I'm too late but can I just give a little heads up for the two "Private Collection" Estee Lauder fragrances?

They're a slightly "limited release" (!), so not everybody has heard about them, hence me doing a little evangelism.

"Classic" is slightly "piney" and "tuberose and gardenia" is sweeter. But they are both absolutely lovely. There is something about them that immediately makes you feel freshly-laundered, organised and rather beautiful. They transform how you feel about your day - honestly! And I wore the "Tuberose and Gardenia" and received more compliments than for anything else I have ever worn.

Both are available from larger department stores.

hey they sound lovely zen - will check them out - am not convinced about the Paul Smith, nice though it is, it's perhaps a little too 'transient'

Has anyone tried Stella perfume by Tocca.

OMG I tried some on Sunday and it stayed with me the whole day - so gorgeous.

RamblingRosa · 12/01/2009 12:59

I'm impressed Zen. Are you a perfumier or something?

harpomarx · 12/01/2009 13:07

Hey, zena - can you come up with some suggestions for me? I like Mitsouko but it's very expensive and I don't want to be too boring and stick to the same perfume my whole life. I also like greeny fragrances. I absolutely hate heavy florals, anything too sweet. I have worn O de Lancome, but I just quite like it, rather than love it. I'd love to find another perfume that makes me feel as special as Mitsouko!

RamblingRosa · 12/01/2009 13:14

I've seen Mitsouko for sale in Superdrug for £10 Harpo. Not recently mind you but they often seem to have Guerlain scents quite cheap.

harpomarx · 12/01/2009 13:26

that would probably be the Eau de Toilette, Rosa.... I like the Eau de Parfum . It smells quite different, the Eau de Toilette is fine but the Eau de Parfum is luscious and makes me want to sniff myself all over!

zenandtheartofbaking · 12/01/2009 20:17

RamblingRosa: not a perfumier, just a very sad addict. Or should that be, a very happy addict. and I live in London, so it's very easy to go out and try everything! Hurrah!!!

HarpoMarx: You probably already know about this blog, but I'll post it here anyway:

for addicts

If you like both O de Lancome and Mitsouko, then you have broad tastes. M. is a chypre and O is citrussy. Finding a replacement for M. is going to be hard though. It's generally regarded as The One, and finding a replacement might well be regarded as an Impossible Quest.

Read through some of the descriptions and see if you can work out what you particularly like about Mitsouko, its spiciness, its intimacy, its heady quality, what the atmosphere it summons up for you is; that kind of thing - and that might help you narrow your search down a bit.

Oooh - it's lovely finding other enthusiasts!

Stella by Stella McCartney has a lovely and deep sandalwood and amber base but also with a strong floral hit so perhaps not exactly what you are looking for but could be a starting point. DH also bought me Midnight Poison by Dior last year. I had a panic attack when I opened it - the whole Poison thing is far too 80's for me!! HOWEVER, I stand corrected because it is in fact a lovely spicy scent. Not as fresh as nutmeg/cedarwood spice but definitely spicy .

Is Rive Gauche still available? I remember that from the 80's too and that had a beautiful spicy base note.

I tried the Stella Macartney Two peony - quite strong after a few days on it's paper sample thing...

thanks for the link, zen... I only recently found out that Mitsouko was so famous, I boringly adopted it because my mum wears it and I have just always adored it. It just smells like me! Think I'll have to visit a few perfume counters soon on my impossible quest...
