Dying ones hair...is it a slippery slope?

Cos I am currently being bullied into it...

I just worry that it would be a slippery slope that I would have to perpetuate from now until I die (as opposed to dye!)....

Don't be bullied. Just Say No. .

You wouldn't have to do it perpetually but you do have to do it every 6 weeks or so while you want the colour to stay. Which is a chore if you don't really like the look.

Semi-permanent dyes aren't semi-permanent on my hair - I have to wait for them to grow out even though they are supposed to have washed out after 6 weeks. And growing out hair dye is horid - you look daft for ages. Or you have to keep using wash-in-wash-out ones.

And if you choose the wrong dye you can end up with a seriously itchy head.

I wouldn't do it unless I really preferred the way I looked with dyed hair (which I do!).

Depends what kind of colour.. a hint of colour to brighten up otherwise dull hair, or dyeing to cover up greys... if it's the latter then I'd avoid unless they really bother you as it's quite high maintenance, as grey roots aint a good look. If it's the former then it's not so bad if you don't keep it up so often.

SlightlyMadScientist · 07/01/2009 20:36

Hmmm....I guess it would be for 2 reasones - to brighten up natural colour and to cover the grey stragglers that are evident.

I don't really mind the idea of colouring, and I woudln't mnd brightening my tones and covering the grey...but I am not very good at going to hairdressers regularly (I have probably only been 6-8 times in the last 10 years) - and just think that would make it a diaster in the long term....

If it is just a bit of grey and not too drastic a colour change it won't matter too much if you leave it a bit long between dyes.

My hair is supposed to be black and is 80% grey now, so I dye it, but if I don't redo it very regularly I look like a badger.

You don't need to brave the hairdressers, the home kits are pretty easy.

yes you will on botox by next thursday and then it is knee lift for you ms scientist.

if it hasn't occurred to you to do it for yourself then you probably do suit your hair undyed. if you think you look like shit then you wouldn't be asking.

MrsSeanBean · 07/01/2009 22:09

Yes. But but the alternative (looking shite, if you are prematurely grey like me) is not good either. So go for it.

SlightlyMadScientist · 07/01/2009 22:16

I was told I look shit actually with a mophead.

I am (apparently) being dragged to the hairdressers for a cut and colour

are you curly? what is this mop? POST PICS

SlightlyMadScientist · 07/01/2009 22:30

I am very curly underneath but only slightly wavey on top...so look like a bit of a freak unless I straighten (which I only do when I am going out)....so I tend to live with a pony tail at the nape of my neck.

I have to dye and straighten to look half decent SMS.

I am terrible fiddler with home hair dyes. But recently had a really good result with a Nice&Easy root treatment in a colour very near to my own (common or garden brown) to disguise the grey around my hairline. Then used a 'Shaders' in warm copper but combed it through when I put it on to mute it.
Really pleased with it. It looks as if I care, but if I decide not to care in a few weeks time, it won't really matter.

Earthymama · 08/01/2009 13:46

I always dye my hair at home but recently had a disaster after a course of medication for shingles.

I wanted a warmer blonde as I'd been ill and looked as if I'd died and been dug up but it went so, so wrong!! I looked like This!

So just be careful and all will be well, I've spoken to the guy who cuts my hair and confessed!! I'm having lots of it cut tomorrow, just hope he doesn't laugh too loudly when he sees me

wasabipeanut · 08/01/2009 13:53

It is a treadmill - I have my many greys covered up every 6-8 weeks or so. I went a bit lighter to avoid there being so much of a line because at one point it was obvious after about 4 weeks.

I started going grey as a teenager so haven't seen my natural colour for nearly 20 years. It's the only personal maintenance I do and I HATE the way grey hair makes me feel.

Takver · 08/01/2009 13:55

Not eternal at all, you can always just dye your hair back to your natural colour if you don't like it or get sick of waiting for it to grow out.
I'd been dithering about dyeing mine for months, finally did it just before Christmas & am chuffed to bits with the results. When I get sick of it, I'll dye it brown again.
Mind you, my hair is very very short, so the coloured bit will be gone in about 3 cuts anyway.
