I love hats.

I wish I had been around in the 1940s when it was de rigueur for a lady to wear one when out and about.

However, back to the present.

Will I be thought odd if I wear something this for everyday wear...?

Or this?

first link doesn't work, here it is again

fishie · 06/01/2009 22:49

no. you cannot wear that first / third link. there is too much going on.

what is your hair like? i like second one. ears? hair?

i always wear hat, get earache. currently muted teal oversized beret / beanie combo (£20)

Katisha · 06/01/2009 22:50

I like that first one. Would probably go for the black version myself. I really miss an old velvet hat I had for years - very unusual shape and have never seen anytihng like it since. Bit like a cloche but with an extended brim at the front - rather suffragette I always thought. Sigh.

MrsSeanBean · 06/01/2009 22:54

Hair is long uncontrollable layered style. I feel it would need to be in an 'up do' for the pillbox otherwise it would look like a pea on a ruler.

At least the velveteen one would clamp the unruly mane down a bit? But I guess a real 'lady' wouldn't have that problem. She would have sleek manicured rolling tresses on which any hat would perch effortlessly.

you are going for a fairly constructed style of hat so either you really do know what suits or else it is worth going to selfridges and trying lots (they have have the best hats imo).

MrsBadger · 06/01/2009 23:13

1 is brought low by bow at the back

2 is passable

you will look like Sarah Ferguson going to a wedding though

get a trilby, which will at least look modern

MrsSeanBean · 06/01/2009 23:47

LOL is that a bad thing MrsB? I was told there was a passing resembalnce in my youth..

p1umpudding · 06/01/2009 23:53

what a fabulous website. agree with Mrs Badger though, I think a trilby would be better BUT if you feel comfortable wearing your choice, then great!

MrsSeanBean · 07/01/2009 00:01

Sadly I don't feel a trilby is for me.

i know a fabulous maker of hats. cant remember what they are called. but if you are going to be spending that sor tof money, you should spend a bit more, an get the right one, right size, right materials etc, that match your coat etc.
i have a five pound one fro tesco as currently go tno money, but i would happily pay fifty for something from her.
the main thing you need to decide is what you want to wear the hat for? is it just an accessory the way that a pretty hair clip would be? or is it to control tame your hair? or is it to keep your hea warm? or you ears? or your forehead? once you have answered those quiestions, they will have helped you to shorten the styles somewhat.
another thing to remember is that often hats in shops are not lined properly. and imo, an unlined hat is completely uselss.

MrsBadger · 07/01/2009 08:43

try a trilby with a wide brim (Top Man often good) angled to one side

like the second from the left, second row here

actually this page has some good hat ideas

Katisha · 07/01/2009 09:11

Stitch would your hatmaker be able to recreate my old hat if I sent it to her? Tis v old and battered now. Velvet.

dexter73 · 07/01/2009 10:31

I like this hat on Kate Winslet.

MrsSeanBean · 07/01/2009 21:59

Hmm Mrs B, amending my thinking on trilbys, that look is quite good.

katisha, her name is rae oakley. she makes them all herself, so no reason why she couldnt make it for you. she will use the materials you want as well, and make suggestions.
i personally havent ended up having anything made, as finances took a massive downturn just about the time i was considering getting a couple of decent hats made. so am havng to make do with my tesco cheap one. but, my good friend has hers made. she has alopecia, so has quite specific requirements. and her hats are always gorgeous imo.
let me just find you the link
here

bigTillyMint · 09/01/2009 10:46

If you live in London, no-one will bat an eyelid.

Dunno about elsewhere though!

Katisha · 09/01/2009 13:18

Thanks stitch - I'll look into it!

mrsmaidamess · 09/01/2009 13:20

M & S had some fab felt trilbys in the sale, I bought a lovely brown one for £9.

Ds says 'Why are you wearing that Top hat?' Peasant!

nickschick · 09/01/2009 13:23

I wear hats a lot of the time i liked the 1st/3rd one but not the second .....go on primark and try loads on - currently i wear beret style on which i have sewn funky diamante stones.

katch · 09/01/2009 13:28

MSB, those hats are such disparate styles - they'd both suit someone but not the same person iyswim.

If your style is roman tic/pretty/nostalgic, go for the velvet one.
I'd say the fez style is for someone whose style is more gamine- Audrey Hepburn style/military/neat and tidy.

Get yourself to an image consultant to find out what suits you. Saves loads of money and angst.

madre, thanks for killing this thread.
headgear is not only something that completes a look. it is also something that keeps you warm.and particularly considering the current weather, an essential part of our wardrobes.
far better to wear a stylish hat, than a frumpy horrible beanie that would be chucked in th ebin, were it not for teh arctic conditions.
9although some beanies can be quite nice,)

katch · 11/01/2009 23:31

Hear hear - although I don't really suit hats, I support anyone's right to wear an attractive one if they want to.

And on really cold days I'm wearing a knitted slouchy beret with a flower from Accessorise.

(I feel the same way about beanies as I do those ubiquitous padded coats atound atm).

MadreInglese · 12/01/2009 09:30

I'm only jealous really as I seem to look like a jester in any kind of hat!
