Black tie do - can I wear boots with LBD?

We're going to a work black-ish tie event this week (ie most men wear black tie, and the women dresses of varying lengths). I have a very old 'little black dress' - v classic velvet, sleeveless - which is several inches above the knee. Can I wear it with knee high boots? The boots in question have a high, but not stiletto heel (they're Hobbs 'Boyd' boots). The venue is a marquee and apparently quite cold, so boots seem to make sense. I'm told I have the legs to carry off the dress, but at slightly over 40, I don't want to look like mutton, nor like I've walked out of the nearby S&M parlour. Please may I have your thoughts? Many thanks!

I would say go for shoes in keeping with the black tie tradition.

Jewelsandgems · 05/01/2009 21:36

black tie and boots? No no no!

stringbean · 05/01/2009 21:40

I do have some lovely shoes too, but just would feel a bit vulnerable showing that much leg. Boots make me feel a bit more 'covered up' - and there are dodgems and things to climb in and out of in the after dinner 'entertainment' thing. Was thinking of Bridget Jones when she did the book launch thing - OK, maybe Rene Z can get away with LBD and boots. Maybe not me?

wear boots if you want to stringbean. what tights though?

Lizzylou · 05/01/2009 21:44

No, not boots and LBD.
Sorry!
I am shopping for shoes (can't be too high or expensive) as I am at a Burns Night Black tie this year.
But, no flash leg, no boots

BettyTurnip · 05/01/2009 21:44

Shoes and opaque tights thus mimimising flashing lots of flesh whilst clambering about?

stringbean · 05/01/2009 21:45

Well, three outright no's pretty much answers my question. I shall stick to shoes and look (hopefully) elegant and classy. Thank you all!

Hadn't thought of opaque tights - had thought they would need to be sheer. Any suggestions? What denier?

oliviasmama · 05/01/2009 22:05

ooooh purple sounds good

stringbean · 05/01/2009 22:17

Shoes are black and slingback. I had assumed black tights? Would v opaque look naff with slingbacks? Is a different colour acceptable? Visions of Ginger Spice in a photo recently in purple tights being derided by all and sundry.....

stringbean · 05/01/2009 22:49
