right how long have you got and what shops? i do think mainly sales not helpful, they are getting rid of stuff that nobody wants ffs.

AuraofDora · 04/01/2009 21:46

er, got about a week
got about £200 ish

shops - access to all parts of london
like small boutique places but way out of touch

i agree about the sales, generally avoid hate shopping and esp in a jumble sale
good for gloves, scarfs, tights or no?

do what thy wilt with the whole of my wad..
well apart from on the nose at the 1.30 from kempton ..

how formal do you want? do you need to wear a jacket or is just shirt / top / cardi ok?

fishie · 04/01/2009 22:15

my sister says kensington high st is best for shopping. give that a go first, if not then regent street has cos (i work off traf sq so this is what i know) and banana republic which is dear but worth it. they had 30% off knitwear last time i was in which makes v good value. also look in benetton, sometimes dreadful but did have nice boots recently.

janeite · 05/01/2009 18:36

I like both pairs of boots.

I'm sorry but I really, really dislike that cardigan from LK Bennet. Sorry, but did I say, I REALLY don't like it?!

Banana Republic worth a look, although I still think Gap has lots of lovely basics and they are cheaper. Loads of pretty silk camisoles and tops, lots of wool trousers or slim cut black ones, lots of nice slim cardigans. I had my eye on a scrummy grey wool, 50s style dress but they didn't have my size on the five (yes FIVE) occasions I looked.

The grey M&S cardigan is okay but maybe a bit chunky. Have M&S still got their cashmere in, as that is lovely and soft and not too thick.

AuraofDora · 06/01/2009 20:11

lol janeite..the cardi is a bit of a horror! I like the sound of the Banana Rep / will check Gap too and cashmere mmmmm & ssssssss cashemere..
scribbling them on list, ta

i dont need to be formal but want to be smartish comfortable...stylish dare i say?..
cashmere mmmmmm think will blow my modest wad on few really good bits

any handbag ideas?

OP posts:
janeite · 06/01/2009 20:24

Can't help on handbags sorry. Mine cost 5 Euros in Greece and dd1 says it looks like a cowboy's satchel.

AuraofDora · 06/01/2009 20:35

Bought two beautiful lightweight cardigans from Laura Ashley - seriously!

EachPeachPearMum · 06/01/2009 23:15

Muji have nice, understated things too.

slug · 07/01/2009 10:34

Uniqlo have very nice long sleeved cotton T shirts in a variety of colours and neck sizes. I find they wash well and look good for ages. I tend to wear them with pencil skirts and boots or under a couple of linen shift dresses I got from M&S last year.

AuraofDora · 07/01/2009 10:50

thanks uniqlo muji, will check em out..(i thought muji was household nic nac stuff

saw a nice skirt in zara will to try to link shopping day tomorrow so feel bit more prepared

What I would recommend is getting all your suitable for work clothes out of the cupboard, laying them on the bed and then start trying to put them together as outfits: you might find that you have a lot of stuff already that would work (and sometimes you find combos that you never would have realised otherwise). This will also give you an idea of what sorts of colours you have, and whether or not they all go together.

Other good shops (on Regents Street) are Cos (upmarket branch of H&M) and Massimo Dutti: it's quite good and relatively cheap.

AuraofDora · 07/01/2009 11:04

bleh, thanks! yeh realising i do have a few very useable and thankfully fitable clothes and some nice accessories
i do need flat boots, not going to ruin my good ones
and a few changes of tops maybe a skirt would help me feel updated and dressed ready for work in first time in 5 years

thanks for tips

Greys, blacks, Navys, Mink type colours. They do cottons and knits- good quality too.
Shirts, blouses, unstructured tops, trousers, skirts etc.
