Black dress at a wedding - is it a big no no?

Wedding is at 4pm, not in church. The invite says Black Tie. I had a baby a month ago and not much fits me

i though black was ok now, esp if invite is black tie and lots of formal winter dresses are black

Tillyscoutsmum · 31/12/2008 20:27

Black is fine imho... I got married last month and I reckon about 80% of the guests had black based outfits

cupcakesinthesnow · 31/12/2008 20:29

I wore a backless black dress with red pashmina wrap to a wedding last weekend. A lot of other women were in black.

aGalChangedHerName · 31/12/2008 20:29

Ds1's gf wore a black dress to mine last year and it was fine IMO

lizandlulu · 31/12/2008 20:40

i wore a black dress to a wedding in november and looked fine, had a pink sash and fascinator though

LadyThompson · 31/12/2008 20:41

Fascinator. Mmm, that's a thought. It's quite a poshie. But the dress is to my ankles, so...

I mean the wedding is a poshie.

OP posts:
lizandlulu · 31/12/2008 20:46

does that make a difference?

MrsSeanBean · 31/12/2008 21:32

Isn't it more of a faux pas to wear white nowadays?

Heated · 31/12/2008 21:34

It's all in how your accessorize it, imo. As long as your don't look funereal you should be ok!

clarebear1 · 01/01/2009 14:07

No its fine i wore a black dress to wedding in nov. Not ideal for summer wedding but nows fine i think.

mosschops30 · 01/01/2009 14:09

Someone wore a black dress to my wedding and looked gorgeous.
I cant see why not!

swiftyknickers · 01/01/2009 14:14

no problem- i wore a black dress toa wedding in may and i wasnt the only one

LiffeyValleyOfTheDolls · 01/01/2009 14:43

If you're the mother of the groom then I'd say no, no, no.

But if it's a winter wedding and you're a friend of the brides, and the black outfit is accessorised well, then I'd say yes.

But i know nothing about the finer etiquette tbh. Just my gut feeling.

I wore a black chiffon dress to my cousin´s wedding which was in October. If you´re not an ex-gf or relative then it´s quite ok in my book.

Team it with a bright scarf if you feel it´s a bit dark.

artichokes · 01/01/2009 15:04

hi ladyt

According to DeBrett's Guide to Modern Etiquette, Black Tie declares that traditional tuxedos and evening gowns are required.

It does not pronounce either way on the colour black at a wedding.

So IMO a full length black evening guise would be fine esp if, as others have said, you use bright accessories.

SwedesInACape · 01/01/2009 15:06

I think it's OK so long as you don't shout "It should have been me!" during the ceremony.

edam · 01/01/2009 15:07

I wouldn't wear a black dress to a wedding, even if it is in the evening. Maybe a dress with some black, but not on its own.

Simplysally · 01/01/2009 15:12

I wore a flowery black dress to a friend´s weddding as well one July. I´ve heard of the bride wearing black as well!

SalLikesCoffee · 01/01/2009 15:14

I think it's completely fine, but it might be worth it trying to find out how the bride feels about it, as some cultures differ. I had this conversation with a very good friend the other day, and she was horrified that someone would wear black - not the done thing in her home country.

Miyazaki · 01/01/2009 15:15

Agree Liffey lol

V wrong for mother of groom to wear black! I prob wouldn't in normal circs, don't know why - not solid black. But in your position yes go for it!

smurfgirl · 01/01/2009 15:19

My mum had a black and cream dress for our wedding! I think there was a couple of other people in black too.

SalLikesCoffee · 01/01/2009 15:20

If she doesn't have a problem with black, I think it is a lovely choice and you'll look great!

LadyThompson · 01/01/2009 20:16

Thanks ladies. And thanks, Arti, for looking in Debrett's!

It's a big wedding and I have never met the bride so can't really ask her. I am hoping I will blend in somehow.... I think coloured accessories are the way to go...not sure what colour though - it's a myth that everything goes with black. I need to get a wrap at least - to cover my bingo wings The thought of taking my month old DD round the shops tomorrow to buy bits and pieces fills me with ennui, but there you go...
