box of hair dye... help!

I've had my hair highlighted for years and years now (prob decades ) and what with the credit crunch an' all I've gone back to basics.. I've bought a box of hair dye and want to DImyself.

now... do I do it blond (the colour on the box shows to be a few shades lighter than my overall colour atm) all over, just chuck it all on? I'm not sure about a) the block colour and b) the regrowth.

So...i think i should really try and do sections, like i had done professionally a while back (not in my parting though so little re-growth).

does anyone have any tips on how to do this successfully? i was planning on just picking a few 1-2 inch sections just underneath parting and just painting on the dye, then wrapping in kitchen foil. how do i do the back!? any help/tips would be gratefully received

This could be very dodgy. I would advise caution and a strand test. Boring I know, but better than a whole head disaster.

I am not sure if you can use home hair colour and foil as they do at the hairdresser... although logically one would think 'why not?' - but seem to remember seeing something somewhere about not letting home hair colorant touch anything metallic. I may be spouting nonsense though.

Is the stuff you have specifically for highlights? If not, it may be better to get a packet of colour specifically designed for highlights, then you will have all the gear and instructions you need.

When I'm DIY'ing - I use the Colour Expert one (L'Oreal ?).. It has a base colour and then lighter "highlights" you put on after. Re-growth isn't as bad and it looks more natural and more like the highlights/low lights you have at the hairdressers

I would buy th L'Oreal one with the all over dye and the the lightner. you just brush it on and an keep using it every 4-6 weeks. It's about a tenner and very professional looking. Even if I do say so myself

Damn my slow typing
