I've never solved this dilemma.

I usually end of putting shoes on, but this feels ridiculous as I'm in my own house not going out.

Slippers is too relaxed though and looks crap with my carefully considered but not tyring too hard outfit.

Socks or stockinged feet are too cold and slippy. We have no carpet.

I mean the type of event where you have 3 or 4 other couples you know well over.

Am I the only numptey to have this dilemma reguarly??

Trinny and Susannah advocate bare feet. However.....

I wear shoes. It finishes the outfit off, so you look fab when the guests arrive. You can always kick them off later

Stinkyfeet · 30/12/2008 13:13

Nice flip flops usually, but that won't stop your feet getting cold I'm afraid!

TheGreatChristmasEvie · 30/12/2008 13:15

Socks.(not offensive patterned ones, just plain ones)
Or posh slippers if you have them, Ugg type ones.

Colbeck · 30/12/2008 13:22

I didn't know Trinny and Susannh has already addressed this issue!

I like the iage bare feet may portray, in a 'I'm so relaxed and natural and unpretentious and connected to my surroundings'type way

but feel it may be a little pretentious or obviously studied, and there is still the cold feet issue.

I am however relieved to see there is no simple answer I have been ignirantly overlookingThat at least is solace.

Don't fret Colbeck:.I had been ignorantly overlooking the fact that shoes were wrong. I'm afraid I couldn't do bare feet (spillages, accidentally stepping on stray, sharp toy) or slippers (have never seen a remotely stylish pair). I must pay more attention to what my hostesses wear next time I go out.

foxytocin · 30/12/2008 13:27

Hush Puppies make comfy, trying not too hard shoes that can be picked up reasonably in Brantano. YOu can wear them with dressy casual afterwards.

I remember Smiley irritating a few people about 2 yrs ago. It made me smile. 'troll' was used.

jujumaman · 30/12/2008 13:37

Colbeck, see I am coming to stalk you - so you'd better namechange fast!

On these occasions I always plan to wear my highest craziest heels, ones that I have wasted money on and then never dare wear out of the house because I'd topple over within seconds.

At home you can a) Sit down when it gets too much and then b) Kick then off and go barefoot/stockinged feet and your shoes won't get scuffed on pavements etc. However, the reality is I always forget and by the time friends arrive dcs are asleep (shoes are kept in dd2's wardrobe) and I can't be bothered to dig them out. Do better than me. Dazzle with your footwear! And don't namechange!

PootyApplewater · 30/12/2008 13:38

ballet pumps

sophy · 30/12/2008 14:52

Surely you just wear a pair of shoes?

Why would you want to spoil a nice outfit by keeping your slippers on.

janeite · 30/12/2008 15:24

Bare feet or little soft ballet type slippers; we never wear shoes indoors, nor would I ever wear shoes in anybody else's house - although I realise this topic is enough to divide mumsnetters!

FourArms · 30/12/2008 15:32

Usually slipper sock type socks - thicker ones with non slip soles. Crazier pattern the better! However, my outfit would usually be jeans and a jumper!

LongDroopyBoobyLady · 30/12/2008 15:33

Slippers - and a lot of our friends bring theirs too!

ilovemyghds · 30/12/2008 15:37

I don't usually wear anything on my feet (just socks) - in the hope that guests will notice and take off their shoes too. I know it's a separate issue, but I am a non shoe wearer indoors and prefer if people do the same in my house (most don't ). I can't find any nice slippers either though, so usually wear some non offensive, plain slipper socks.

stitch · 30/12/2008 17:27

slippers, or preferably low heeles shoes that vaguely match the outfit. but, then ihave a load of sandal type things.
never socks, as wood floor means they get slippery

Colbeck · 30/12/2008 18:06

It is indeed a difficult issue.

I'd never ask adul.ts to take thier shoes off in my house, but puting shoes on just because poele are coming around seems silly.

But I look so much better in heels.

Oh, will I ever find a solution??

HIgh heeled slippers???

Hi Juju me old mate, how goes it??(I am morphing into nes from gavin and stacy).

Poledra · 30/12/2008 18:18

It's so much easier in the summer - bare feet or pretty flipflops are the answer.

Haven't solved the winter issue; generally end up wearing either just socks (if wearing trousers) or shoes (if wearing skirt or dress). Am putting this thread on Watch now

browntrout · 30/12/2008 18:48

I'm really glad you have asked this - it has vexed me for some time (which is a bit sad I know). I too have no carpets and so cant really do bare feet all night but I feel a bit ridiculous prancing about in heels (and clomping down the hall from the kitchen to the dining room). Maybe something like this ...
www.grahamandgreen.co.uk/product.aspx/womens+accessories/moroccan+leather+slippers/fashion/fashion_b agswallets/-/moroccanslippers.htm ... might be the answer? Think plumo do them as well. Cant really see them with a skirt tho - would have to be trousers for me.
The other thing is, your other female guests will turn up in lovely going out shoes and so you end up feeling a bit of a nob for having your slippers on. Hmmm, need to think about this a bit more!

chandellina · 01/01/2009 21:48

i have lots of cute chinese slippers and indian leather slippers. or ballet shoes. (the real ones)

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 01/01/2009 21:53

nice slippers/ballet flats in winter

flip flops in summer

never bare feet, my feet would put guests off their food

scienceteacher · 01/01/2009 21:54

LoveMyLapTop · 01/01/2009 21:55
