What to wear to a masquerade?

The invite just says masks.

I have visions of ballgowns but don't want to turn up in a ballgown to find everyone else in jeans!

Went to a masquerade ball recently. Got a mask from here. Delivered quickly, and pretty good prices, lots to choose from under £10.
