Indian head massage

Is she skint? When my best friend was a deeply impoverished PhD student, I bought her a large bottle of salon shampoo and conditioner. She said it was such a treat after the Tesco Value crap she'd been using, and they lasted for months. So a top-quality version of something she uses regularly (olive oil, lip balm, anything really) could be a hit.

If she's not, a nice pair of earrings? A big sparkly brooch for her winter coat? I got my mum a pair of cashmere gloves recently and they went down very well.

hannahsaunt · 19/12/2008 03:09

I got lovely leather gloves in John Lewis for £15.

I would like lots of really good paperback books that cost the same as one hardback book, TBH. Hardback always seems like such a waste of money.

CDs are something I don't buy myself but do enjoy receiving.

Other things I would like ... one of those thermos cup things you get in Starbucks and the like; a Starbucks gift card thing with £15 on it; magazine subscription (maybe they cost more than that, I don't know); vouchers for sales shopping/salon haircut/massage; definitely no knick-knacky things; nice mug with nice coffee; cake tins; not candles; maybe Green & Black's chocolate.

ninedragons · 19/12/2008 03:19

Does she have thick or wavy hair? Pure bristle brushes are a bit of an indulgence but absolutely lovely.

The adult sizes exceed your budget but this child's size would be good for her handbag.

Ooooh, I've just thought, lovely stationery. Search threads for stationery porn and you'll get some fantastic suggestions.

And make sure you come back and tell us your final choice. It's tragic but I often waste valuable neurones wondering what some poster or other bought in the end after soliciting advice here

Ooh Bobbi Brown good call. My close friend used to get me lovely things like that each year, such as Chanel eye shadow. Really appreciated it, plus nice to get another persons take on what suits you.

Sadly now emigrated to NZ

Podrick · 19/12/2008 18:21

Lush giftbox or paperbacks

Megglevache · 19/12/2008 18:21

The EA 8 hour cream is what I get from my BM when I run out oh and one year she got me lots of SpaceNk vouchers which was brill.

I bought her some lovely china cups this year.

samsonara · 19/12/2008 22:28

I got a magazine subscription 3 years ago as a birthday present for a friend, but I only realised a couple of months ago, when Eve closed down, that I had been paying for it for 3 years instead of just for the year it was intended. The person it was for didn't even mention she was still getting it, she knows I was paying as I gave her a copy for her birthday and she even got a free bag with the subscription. So if you do get a subscription, don't just call the company, call your bank direct debit too unless you don't mind paying for more than a year.

yousaidit · 19/12/2008 22:32
