I need an outfit for a posh restaurant and everything I see looks too young for me...

I'm early 40's and a size 16, so I don't think that above the knee is a good look for me. I'm also not comfortable with sleeveless and am really struggling to find anything that is fashionable and flattering.

Any ideas?

I am average of nork, a bit of a tummy, pale and blond.

why not trousers then? You dont need to show skin in December fgs.

CatMandu · 18/12/2008 20:00

ah, of course I have some great flattering black crepe trousers from French Connection. What to wear on top? I'm normally good at this sort of thing, but have been so busy and now we are going tomorrow night!

I think plain is oft the best way to go at a dinner party wiht fab jewellery( the stuff that looks too showy in store)
this is sleevless but imagine wiht a shrug( in grey) here

Mate of mine came here in this the other day
with black trousers and diamante drop earrings

MrsWilburton · 18/12/2008 20:03

think of a colour that peopel always say you look nice in. get a plain top in that, then get fab jewllery.

MrsWilburton · 18/12/2008 20:04

If your boobs are not big then an empire looks nice. slight drape over gut. comfy when porked out.
are we any good so far?

MrsWilburton · 18/12/2008 20:09

this will do

Flutterbye · 18/12/2008 20:09

Coast have some good dressy tops. I got one from their Bicester outlet, teamed with a gold cardi from new look, it's a winner. Have worn it with skirt, or can do trousers or jeans and heels. Fab.

MrsWilburton · 18/12/2008 20:11

mrs w
plain but sparkly earrings
big ring.

CatMandu · 18/12/2008 20:14

Oh I feel so much happier about this now. Rather pathetically I am more confident about the viola now you've agreed, but also love your Monsoon top too. Luckily I have both Monsoon and Portandstilton's Phase8 ideas in my nearest town, so will go tomorrow.

Will have to practice saying' what, this old thing' to dh.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.
