Ok, I really don't belong in this section, but ...

My bangs (fringe) are really bugging me. I think my longterm plan is to grow them out, and end up with an all-one-length sort of bob. Fine.

But they're longish now, and they're bugging me, so I bought some elasticy fabric "alice band" (I think this is the right word in this country?) sort of things. How the hell do I wear them? I put them on, and my hair goes straight back and then foofs out and I look like a giant dork. What am I missing here? (Please don't say 'the right kind of hair'.) Do I need one of those plastic alice bands instead?

they really don't suit me at all and i like them think you need the right sort of hair and head shape.

i was growing my fringe then gave up

stitch · 10/12/2008 20:35

try the cloth ones. but basically, you just need to brazen it out until they are long enough. i think. someoene else may have better advice.

Ivykaty44 · 10/12/2008 20:37

It is the wrong sort of alice band, and this is why you end up with the hair sticking out and your head looking weird.

I would do grips, light colour grips for fair hair and dark for dark hair and grip the hair away - possibly do a side ish parting to make it less obvious.

it is difficult to tell as obviously I cant see you, but hoping this makes sense and will help.

NotQuiteCockney · 10/12/2008 20:38

I have the cloth ones. My hair is straight and fine.

I have some dress-up events in the next week, and am thinking about either faffing about and trying to 'style' my hair into something ... but one of the events is v formal and 'straight', so was thinking I would maybe just slick my hair back with goop and put on a hairband? I have 3 tiny velvet ones (black, red, blue) and a silver 3-strand one ...

A grip is what when it's at home? A barrette? I will try getting some of those. My hair is very fine and quite slippery, when I last had hair, I didn't really get on with them.

I can braid up or twist my hair, I guess, then put a barrette in it?

Oh, grip as in kirby grip?

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 10/12/2008 20:40

I was thinking about kinda twisting my hair against my head, and then somehow using a barrette or something at the end.

clip is good, don't wash it for a few days then you could backcomb it slightly then clip back, just the centre bit looks best for me

plus3frenchhens · 10/12/2008 20:42

ok longish fringes are 'in' I believe right now. Can you change your parting slightly - allows for less in your eyes.

Stick it out..I've always had long hair and on a whim as a student I had a pixie cut!!! Can not even now describe how hideous it was to lose my hair...but with the help of a very helpful hairdresser who kept cutting up the back so it eventually grew out into a bob it was less traumatic!!!

princessmel · 10/12/2008 20:45

I'd either sweep the fringe to the side and put a pretty clip in it.

Or twist it up and clip it back at the front of your head. I'll find some pics.

princessmel · 10/12/2008 20:45

?? barrette?

scary

NotQuiteCockney · 10/12/2008 20:47

My parting is already on the side, can't really move it, there's a cowlick.

I've had a shaved head for years, hair is pretty annoying to me.

I was just going to add that I didn't think you had hair!

If it's already side parted, just clip it to that side.

southeastastra · 10/12/2008 20:53

get a fringe cut again

i seem to spend my life growing mine out then cutting it again

i can't imagine you with hair

plus3frenchhens · 10/12/2008 20:56

it's cold enough...put a hat on

NotQuiteCockney · 10/12/2008 21:49

I do wear hats, or bike helmets, most of the time.

I've got a pretty square face, a fringe doesn't really suit.

OP posts:
princessmel · 10/12/2008 22:25

what do you think of my linked pics?

NotQuiteCockney · 11/12/2008 07:15

They both look nice, I know how to do buns, but I just don't have enough hair yet. The second idea might work.

I like you had no hair (always wore it as a grade 6, sooooooooo much easier, but put on a lot of weight and it made me look like something from prisoner C block H, so have grown it)

Anyway, I went to a do on Tuesday, and backcombed it away from my face, a bit like Beyonce in her I I was a boy vid, a uses LOTS of hairspray, if that any help.

NotQuiteCockney · 11/12/2008 08:01

It is easier having no hair. I've lost weight rather than gained. Oh, and the haircut was always partly about my belief that I would end up bald (my mom's hair thinned really badly). Only apparently my hair is fine, if anything, it's thicker, because of the grey.

I don't have hairspray, but I do have a range of gels, will have a go with one of those. I almost bought the 'manga head' one.

I wouldn't wear an Alice band! How about a few of those tiny tiny butterfly clips to hold hair off face?
