What kind of shoes with a pencil skirt?

I am being forced to attend going to my husband's Xmas party at a very posh hotel. I feel very much the poor relation when amongst the wives of his colleagues who who look very groomed and glamourous when compared to my size 16 18 self.

They will all be wearing dresses but I have decided on a skirt and sparkly top and just hope it is dressy enough, having never in my 30 years worn a frock of any kind.

My dilemma is, what do I wear on my feet? What will look good? I have wide feet, size size and chunky calves. Shoes? Boots? Boot-shoes? I am planning on wearing tights, of course if that makes a difference. I think my legs would go into shock if exposed to natural light for too long ;)

Personally I'd wear high heels, stilettoes or similar.

But I am a ho

This sort of shape would be good, and not too high so won't feel tottery.

will work well with thick black tights

Take a gander at the heels in New Look and then look for something similar but more expensive.

I have seen those ones with the bow at the back in rl and they are really vile. Very cheap and nasty looking. I too linked them on a thread a while back thinking they looked nice but in reality they are awful.

Thank so much everyone.

Just how long would it take me to learn to walk in stilettos?

Drool, but I would fall flat on my face

I had to go to an arty event with dh when I was preg with dd.

I felt compelled to look a bit cool and for my sins I wore (bear in mine I was v. preg at this point) a long pencil skirt, with a short, kimono-style top and high heels - black, patent, wedge, ankle-strap, not pointy toe. They were very "directional" at the time and from Topshop.

Honestly - what a joke.

I'd advise wearing high heels but something a little unconventional otherwise it can look a little un-ironic. I'm afraid I can't be more specific - I'm useless at links but I would advise looking for some of those patent high heeled pumps with a bit of a platform. Round-toed, taper not stilletto heel. I think Hobbs have something like that in their sale at the moment.

Don't worry about the other wives Geepers. It's always easy to imagine how glam everyone else will be when in reality they're just normal people like you/us. You'll probably be surprised at how un-glam everyone is! Make sure you feel comfortable in what you wear. Def go for some nice heels, not boots. Lots of the suggestions on here are good but be warned that peeptoes are a bit of a problem when it comes to tights. I've tried on those M&S ones that missblythe did a link to and they're really nice and fairly easy to walk in (considering they're really high). Good price too. And they come in satin too (nicer than velvet IMO).
There are lots of sales on too. Can you go down to your high street and check out some of the shoe shops? Just try on a few different pairs to see what suits you and what you can walk in.
Also, you can always make the outfit more impressive with some good accessories. Remember to get a great bag. A nice outfit can be ruined by a bag that doesn't go.
Have a lovely time at the party
