The NHS has kindly supplied me with the most fugly work bag for my new job, I want to replace it, Any stylish NHS community workers out there with better ideas?

Not only is it ugly and been well used by it's previous owner and is scruffy but it's also heavier than any content i might fill it with.

I want to buy my own bag and return the bag to the department so let's not turn this into a 'well i pay my taxes and you are ungrateful thread'. I too pay tax, but i don't think i should be cursed with an ugly big bag to carry around all day while i care for sick people.

Something big enough for patient files, wide enough for an A4 ringbinder, but not expensive so i won't mind dogs sniffing about it without me hyperventilating

Anyone?
TIA

How many files ? DH (not NHS) has a pilot case with wheels and a handle to tote all of his files and stuff around with him.

If you want light, cheap, and big enough to carry a couple of ring binders, I have a number of conference bags that would fit the bill nicely, and are yours for free

pamplemousse · 04/12/2008 21:50

lol I came on this thread not with advice but to find out what the word fugly meant... am enlightened Good luck in new job

Dragonbrandybutter · 04/12/2008 21:51

not a case with wheels. i need to able to carry it and will only have a few paper files at the same time in it.

what's a conference bag? (it's a nice offer, but i'm sure i can't accept, i've already been sent a pair of shoes by a mnetter this year and haven't yet passed on the goodwill)

i'm thinking along the lines of a laptop bag with a bit of style.

conference bag: those free bags you are given at conferences with the agenda and a variety of useless pamphlets. If you are NHS you MUST have a selection, surely? Get yourself along to the next BMA/RCN/ whatever thingy and take your pick.

TheProvincialLady · 04/12/2008 21:54

Oh bugger, I wanted to complain about paying taxes for you ungrateful NHS employees

Unless it's poo brown of course, or navy blue vinyl.

cmotdibbler · 04/12/2008 21:55

The conference bags are a bit bigger than A4, have a number of pockets, a shoulder strap, and are black nylon with a logo for various radiotherapy conferences on. You get issued them with all the conference stuff in, and as I go to these things as an exhibitor I have a few lurking around. They aren't precisely things of beauty, but v practical.

I saw some nice laptop bags recently - will try and remember where. My laptop bag is a ffugly rucksac, but its so practical I can't bring myself to dump it

Jeepers · 04/12/2008 21:57

Try www.scaramangashop.co.uk/fashion/leather-bags/for-him/leather-messenger-bags/medium-wide-leather-mes senger-bag/prod_20.html

Forget the 'his and hers' rubbish. The medium is perfect for files and can fit a laptop in if necessary. Looks fab too...

cheekysealion · 04/12/2008 21:57

i work for the nhs in the community and didnt get a bag

I have had various ones over the last few years... cheapest from Bantano and most expensive from John Lewis and funkiest from Roxy...

Dragonbrandybutter · 04/12/2008 22:00

black vinyl with zippy pockets everywhere and a really thick heavy base. i know not why.

alas i am returning to work after sprogging my sproglets and have not been invited to any conferences yet. anyone got a picture of a conference bag?

don't get me started on the uniform?
most community workers get to wear their own stuff, but no, physios must be stripped of all their style and dressed in polyester. i hate wearing white, didn't even wear it for my wedding.

and blue stripes? i have green eyes FGS, this is not going to work.

You are a physio LOL

Stop yer moaning woman, I am dressed in bottle green with a toilet seat under my arm!!

Dragonbrandybutter · 04/12/2008 22:38

oh i know. there's nothing you can do with that bottle green serin, i'd have to change careers , although it might go with my eyes better

oooh, mmj, i'll come back to that one in a minute.

ok so eastpak is definitely more practical if i can find a colourway to my taste.
and the man bag is very nice and seems a reasonable price for a leather bag (but not sure it passes the dog sniffing hyperventilation test, tis very nice)
but will they fit those big cardboard files that are way bigger than needed as they only ever have A4 paper in them.

mmj, oooooooooooh red.
with embossing!
oh i've come over all giddy

OP posts:
Dragonbrandybutter · 04/12/2008 22:59

ok, so have now actually measured a file.
so the bag needs to be at least 12.5 inches wide (32cm)
by 10 inches (26cm)

Anyone know how big this Kipling? one is? i quite like the rhubarb colour and i have a voucher for amazon.

or this in raspberry? but a bit pricey for a work bag.

i guess you've all gone to bed now?

OP posts:
ilovejonty · 05/12/2008 09:39

Something like this?

Dragonbrandybutter · 05/12/2008 13:14

i don't know ilovejonty, patent is good but i prefer some colour. good price though.

OP posts:
Dragonbrandybutter · 05/12/2008 13:18

seriously, could somebody with taste please get a job at eastpak and make them messenger bags in decent colours and fabrics? blaaaaah.

OP posts:
Dragonbrandybutter · 05/12/2008 13:56

howsitgonnacomeout · 06/12/2008 10:52

mens satchels at mulberry are nice- yes expensive, but less so in the sale and look better the more distressed they are.

Dragonbutter · 06/12/2008 11:40

i think i'm going to wait a few weeks for the sales and see what i can pick up.
man bags are a lot cheaper than the same bag for women so i'll keep an eye out for some bargains.
