Has anyone had long striaght hair and had it cut short - should I do it??

I have been contemplating this for ages, I have longer than shoulder length hair, and I just tie it back every day. Both for ease and if I do wear it down it just hangs like a pair of curtains!

I keep looking at shorter styles, and wonder whether to go for it! I have tried having it cut shorter so I cant tie it up, but it drives me mad as it is fine but I have loads of it.

Any hairdressers out there or people who have done this, who can advise me either way??!!

Do it!

long hair is so dull if it is always tied back......what about layers and a fringe?

theinsider · 01/12/2008 20:20

I did it on a complete whim a few years back. Never regretted it, though it took a little while to find a style I liked. On the day I just walked into a salon I'd never been to before and said "cut it off".

It took a while to get used to the feel of a cold neck.

Might as well, you can always grow it again.

andyrobo237 · 01/12/2008 20:23

I know, but I worry that I will have to find time to style it in the morning, and I already run round like a Mad Woman barking orders at the kids!

Maybe I should go and have a chat with my hairdresser and see what she says - if only I could see what it would look like before I do it!!

Yes, but the shortest I got was a bob with a fringe. Very practical if you don't have time to deal with your hear.

I'm growing it out now because I have time to put it up again now.

giddykipper · 01/12/2008 20:26

I went from long hair (below shoulders) to Victoria Beckham-like crop in one go. The hairdresser was scared!

It takes marginally more time in the morning as I have to style it, but it doesn't take a lot of effort and is more stylish than just being scraped into a ponytail each morning. I'm talking 5 minutes rather than 2 minutes!

i did this in august. a mad new hairdresser suggested a short graduated bob. to be honest it was a bit too short and i only like it now three months later!

i'd suggest doing it in stages maybe

macherie · 02/12/2008 11:40

Oh, please be careful!

I cut my longer than shoulder length hair to very short(VB length) during the summer, and while it gave me a great thrill initially, within weeks I was sorry I did it.

4 months on, I am now trying to grow it into a bob and it will be another 3 months until I get there. In the meantime I am miserable everytime I look in the mirror

Like you, I just tied up my long hair every day, so I thought what was the point in having it long. But I miss the versatility of longer hair, and to be honest the femininity.

Short hair can be very stylish, but it's not 'pretty' IKNWIM. I have decided that my face suits longer, at least chin length hair, but I've learned the hard way

Definately cut it, but make sure you go to a really good hairdresser, and make sure they do something which suits your face shape. If you do it bob length, it will be much more painless to grow out if you don't like it.

Good luck with it!

Why not have some shaping cut into your hair first ? I have very long hair, but at the front it graduates from jaw length down into the long so that when its down it swishes and doesn't hang in front of my face. When I had more time in the morning pre DS I had a fringe that graduated in as well, but that needed drying and I just don't have that time reliably.

Over the years I have cut my hair off a couple of times. This was a bad thing as my hair is fine but lots of it, and its wavy - so a bob looked shocking without proper washing and careful drying every day. And in damp weather like a big fluffy mop. I found some pictures the other day, and sat in horror at my hair.

With long hair, I know that it can look nice and stylish even with a quick wash, no styling, and an ibis clip, and stunning with straightners, product and time.

I had my hair cut, but shorter, not short.
I had layers put in around my face, from cheekbone level, no fringe.
Because - it kept enough weight in my hair to stop it flying everywhere (it's fine, like yours).
A fringe would have been a faff to grow out if I'd hated it.
It looked interesting (!) without having to do anything high-maintenance every morning.
But it could be dressed up if occasion required (because of the length).
I could still tie it back if I hated it.
It wasn't as radical as going short but was a good stepping-stone to check out if I liked the idea.
I'd give you the name of my hair-cutter but I live in London so no good to you but do get a good one who comes recommended - especially the first time.

That's just what I did, so you can throw it into the pot.

bubblagirl · 02/12/2008 12:01

i hated it and i keep doing it every 3 years and now have learnt my lesson to keep it long but have it really shaped and then i can wear it lots of sytyles and it'll look good

i have alot of layers put in and really thinned out and hacked into then i can wear it curled roughed up straightened or rock chick look and can tie it back but still looks interesting as have loose bits of hair that can be messeed around with a styled so simple pony tail can be jazzed up with clips etc

and a good colour with random colours makes it look funky too

at the moment its boring and dull and thats when i get mad and make the mistake of hack it all off so i'll treat myself to new colour and cut and keep it funky for x mas

samsonara · 02/12/2008 12:04

Yes I had a lovely short crop from shoulder length hair, but it needed more cutting regularly to keep it looking good so I grew it again. I think the colouring it or highlights is a better option if you are bored

smurfgirl · 02/12/2008 12:06

You sound like you have the same hair as me (straight, fine and lots of it), I have had it long and short and it works both ways.

If you want to keep your hair long then you can have layers added and a fringe - as cheesy as it sounds it makes a massive difference to my hair which just hangs without them.

I have had a sleek bob as well which was lovely and very easy to maintain - but I felt I always had to style it which was a bit irritating sometimes. It can be nice just to be able to put your hair in a ponytail.

I would really recommend buying some GHDs which makes styling a bob really easy, it takes about 2 minutes to dry off and then just run the GHDs through and curl it under to give it some shape.

ThePellyandMe · 02/12/2008 12:18

I went from long to very short (cropped) in my early 20's and loved it. I then got bored with the constant cuts and grew it long, way beyond shoulder length. I liked it for a while but I think it aged me and I did wear it up alot so then I got a bob. I love it this length. I'm in my mid 30's now. Its much more flattering on me as my hairs quite fine. I'd say go for it

clarebear1 · 02/12/2008 12:54

In may i cut my hair which was just past shoulders to about my ears in a bob,i liked it then but now looking back at pics i dnt like it, So be careful.
It will always grow back anyway so no major!!

ilovejonty · 03/12/2008 13:45

This is difficult as it's so personal, all I can say is that whenever I have done something drastic to my hair I have always regretted it - so do be careful!

I have always had longer than shoulder length apart from a bob once and I hated it (and as other posters have said, it looked even worse that I thought when I looked back at pics of it!)

I'd advise to go gradually shorter if you really want to try short and see how you like it at each stage. Also, there's a lot you can do with longer hair which keeps the length but makes it more interesting. I find long layers are always really versatile. (My hair is medium texture, lots of it and wavy.)

The great thing about longer hair is that you can have the shorter look (tied up) as well as long
