Would like to give it a try but am wondering about how successful it is and also cost has to come into the equation. Thoughts anyone?

ouch.

Take strong painkillers about half an hour before you go in. You can also buy cream which numbs the area but I don't know what it's called.

Thank you. To be honest it has to be better than being so embarrassed all my life that I feel ashamed even in front of my DH.

Right I'm going to spend some of the money left to me by my GD to get this done, he would be pleased

I've had it done on bikini and legs (dark dark hair, my poor dd's have inherited) and pretty pleased with it. It's expensive and takes hours and you can't go in the sun for weeks before or after, but I'm glad I did it.

I still have a few hairs, but they're much finer and far less noticeable. Before I'd have shadow a few hours after shaving and shaving once or twice a day if I was going bare legged, now I reckon I could last two weeks and no one would notice.

I found first time painful, but more because I was nervous and didn't know what to expect. After that (and especially when hairs are reducing in number) it was fine.

Anther factor in the success rate is when in your hair growth cycle you get "zapped". Unfortunately there is no way to tell where you are in your cycle. So some people are lucky, and it only takes a few sessions per area, cos they get it at the right time - for others it takes longer. I spent about £1000 before abandoning it, and even the areas that had gone smooth now have hair growth and you can't tell I've had it done. i really wish it had worked. (I had it on underarm, legs and bikini. Bikini most successful, as other areas the hair was lighter).

MadameCheese · 30/11/2008 20:03

Thank you and good luck too megcleary if you decide to go for it

I had my legs and bikini line done a few years ago. It was v expensive and excruciatingly painful but it was worth it. Some of the hairs have grown back (I think pg hormones triggered some re-growth) but it's nowhere near as bad as before. In the summer I shave my legs every once in a while or go over them with an epilator to get the odd stray hair but in the winter i don't even bother . I was like you and felt like I'd spent my whole life embarrassed by my hairy legs and I was constantly waxing or shaving or epilating. I wish I could afford to do my arms too.

Definitely do your research though. I've got a friend who had it done privately at an NHS hospital because she was concerned that a lot of salons that offer it don't have adequate training. Those lasers are pretty scary so it's important that you trust the person doing it.

I had some work done but need to go back again, as like someone said your hair grows in cycles and there is no way of telling if they are at the right stage of the cycle. iyswim.
I found it beneficial but it is uncomfortable rather like someone scratching you for a prolonged period of time.

Have you seen those Rio scanning laser hair removal machines in Argos? I was thinking of getting one of them, as I have the same problem, you can buy em that do just 1 hair at a time or 20 hairs or 60 hairs now. They have been reduced to £250 from £299 and I'm hoping they go down again! I'm also hoping they will bring another one out that does more than 60 hairs, i first saw them about a yr ago and they only did one hair at a time, then a few months later noticed the 20 hair one and i think the one that does 60hairs is quite recent. I don't know if they are any good though-but it might be a cheaper alternative??? I

I tried two types the laser being by far the most effective after the first treatment the hair had disappeared and took ages to grow back but later treatments weren't so good and now I seem to be back to stage one, they do say that hair grows in six month stages which would explain the regrowth. THe first time I had it done it was very painful.

My mum had laser hair removal on her underarms but it grew back. She also had her bikini line done and nothing has grown back in three years since.

Her friend got burns from laser hair removal. Looks like a rash up her arm. She's hoping to get compensation for it.

christmasBarbielovesSanta · 05/12/2008 23:30

i had a salon which did laser hair removal, its time consuming and requires patience. Will not always work and depends on a lot of things, if you need any advice just yell!
